Oakfield – Shirley A. Cox, 74, of Oakfield, passed away Friday, (January 10, 2014) at the United Memorial Medical Center, in Batavia, following a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Cox was born September 5, 1939 in Batavia, a daughter of the late Jerry and Irene (Colantonio) Tresco.

Shirley was a member of the Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah’s Witness in Batavia. She was an avid reader and greatly enjoyed baking and spending time with her family. Mrs. Cox was well known for her beautiful flower gardens and for her love of the QVC Network. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

She was the wife of the late Garry F. Cox, Sr. who passed away on September 5, 2009.

Shirley is survived by her sons, Garry Cox, Jr. of Akron, Timothy (Nancy) Cox of NC, and Michael (Donna) Cox of Basom; daughters, Rebecca (Robert) Chatt of Oakfield, and Sherri (fiancé Richard Stromski) Cox of Batavia; a brother, David Tresco of Batavia; sisters, Virginia Tresco of Corfu, Geraldine (late Frank) Penkscyk of NC, and Jeanette Cox of Batavia. 6 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews also survive.

There will be no prior visitation. A memorial talk will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, (January 18, 2014) at the Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah’s Witness, 3601 West Main Street Road, Batavia. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cox Family. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery, Batavia.

Megan Catherine Marchese, 26, of Basom, died Saturday, January 11, 2014.

Megan was born March 16, 1987 in Batavia, a daughter of John and Catherine (Peterson) Marchese of Basom.

A member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Medina, she enjoyed outdoor activities and riding her motorcycle. Megan had a love for animals, especially dogs.

Surviving along with her parents are her three sisters, Stacy (Kevin) Ledermann of Webster, Kristina (Jillian Lafond) Marchese of Batavia and Melissa Marchese of Morristown, NJ; her brother, Steven (Sherry) Marchese of Batavia; her grandmother, Mary Louise Peterson Mumford of Oakfield; and her three nephews, Kyle, Owen, and Ryan; along with several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

She is a granddaughter of the late Donald Mumford, Thomas and Catherine Marchese, and Norman Peterson.

Calling hours are Wednesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Burdett & Sanford Funeral Home, 11 Maple Avenue, Oakfield. Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1212 West Ave., Medina. Inurnment will be in Alabama Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family to be distributed to various charities.

Batavia – Richard C. McNulty, 78, of Batavia, a registered nurse in Austin, TX, died Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at Crossroads House, in Batavia.

Mr. McNulty was born October 13, 1935 in Pottsdam, NY, the son of the late George and Marie (Thrasher) McNulty.

He graduated from Norwood-Norfolk High School in 1952 then graduated from St. Lawrence State Hospital School of Nursing in 1957. He worked in and around New York City as an RN until joining the US Army in 1966. He served 2 tours of duty as a Captain in the military hospital in Hanoi Viet Nam.

He was one of the founding instructors of the LPN Nursing School in Warsaw, NY and Hartford, CT.

He relocated to Austin in 1987 and worked in the medical field for the State of Texas and other private facilities and retired after 44 years as a Registered Nurse.

Mr. McNulty was a member of the Genesee Chorale and the First Presbyterian Church in Batavia.
Survivors include a sister, Marilyn Osswald of Austin, TX; a niece, Lisa (Rick) Schmieder of East Bethany; 2 nephews, David (Debra) Osswald of Portland, ME and Thomas (Lisa) Osswald of Austin, TX; several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Services will be announced at a later date. Memorials may be made to Crossroads House, P.O. Box 403, Batavia, NY 14021. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Norwood, NY. Arrangements are being completed by H.E. Turner & Co., Funeral Home, 403 E. Main St., Batavia, NY.

Mr. Chester L. Cratsley, 73, of Batavia, died Thursday (January 16, 2014) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.

Mr. Cratsley was born July 6, 1940 in Harrison Valley, PA, a son of the late LeRoy and Mildred (Quackenbush) Cratsley.

Mr. Cratsley enjoyed gardening, woodworking, fishing, hunting, traveling, camping, playing cards and joking around. He was a volunteer fireman with the South Byron Fire Department, drove truck for Suburban Propane in Rochester and also loved to be around people.

Survivors include his wife, Dawn (Redinger) Cratsley of Batavia; one son, Scott (Kirstie) Cratsley of Batavia; seven grandchildren, Chelsey, Taylor, Hannah, Alex, Zachary, Adam and Michael; one brother, Fred (Sonja) Cratsley of Dundee; four sisters, Mary Lou (Basil) McCutcheon, Shirley (Durrell) Houghaling, Jane (Bill) Putman, all of Pennsylvania, Sharon (Jeff) Dencenburg of Hammondsport and several nieces and nephews.

He is a brother of the late Lucy Force.

Calling hours are Monday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Grace Baptist Church, 238 Vine Street, Batavia. Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday also at Grace Baptist Church. Burial will be in North Byron Cemetery, Byron.

Memorials may be made to the Cratsley family, to be distributed to various charities.

Hornell – William E. Tanner, 82, of Hornell, formerly of Oakfield, a tow motor operator at US Gypsum Co. in Oakfield, for 40 years prior to his retirement in 1991, died Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at St. James Mercy Hospital, in Hornell.

Mr. Tanner was born September 4, 1931 in Johnstown, PA, the son of the late Edward and Nellie Tanner.

He enjoyed gardening, western movies and bowling.

His wife, LaRue V. (Paul) Tanner died November 28, 2012.

Survivors include 5 children, Edward M. Tanner and Teresa L. Tanner, both of Oakfield, Regina L. Tanner and Michael A. Tanner, both of Hornell and Milton H. (Deborah) Tanner of Bath; a brother, John Smith of Bluff, TN; 2 sisters, Alice McHdoo of Jamestown, NY, Faith Adair; 2 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late John Tanner, Ernest Tanner, Dolores Hall, June Palmer and Leona Gardner.

EAST BETHANY – Richard F. Fietz, Jr., 90, of East Bethany, passed away Tuesday (January 21, 2014) at his home.

Mr. Fietz was born October 30, 1923 in Boston, MA, a son of the late Richard F. and Edith Fietz.

A native of Boston, MA, a life-long public servant, and a devoted family man, Richard F. Fietz, Jr. served in the US Army as a combat engineer in the European Theater of Operations during WWII. After the war, he attended Boston University, Middlebury College and Columbia University, graduating with a Masters in Psychology in 1950.

He was a deacon in the Kings Highway Baptist Church, a member of the Eastern Rod and Gun Club and an avid hunter and fisherman.

He married his wife, Antoinette “Toni” (Adragna) in 1948. They moved to Batavia in 1956 and lived in Bethany since 1958. He was a member of the Bethany Volunteer Fire Company, serving as secretary, member of the board of directors and rescue squad. He enjoyed traveling and in his last years surfed the internet avidly for international news. His last international trip was in 1998 to Marseille, where he had been stationed for part of his service in WWII.

He was active in the American Correctional Association, the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, the American Society of Criminology and the International Halfway House Association. He established the halfway house on Greg Street in Rochester as the first one in New York State in the early 1970’s. He retired from his position as Deputy Superintendent of Attica Correctional Facility in 1983.

His wife, Toni, predeceased him in 2012. He had been her dedicated caregiver for the last decade of her life and her companion of 63 years.

He is survived by his daughter, Patricia Lynne Fietz; three grandsons, Alexander Fietz Saldarriaga, Diego Fietz-Bogotá and Giovanny Fietz; two granddaughters-in-law, Yveth Saldarriaga and Ana Ruth Fietz-Bogotá; two great-grandchildren, Esmeralda Layla Saldarriaga and Piero Alessandro Saldarriaga; and his “baby” sister, Roberta Fitzpatrick. The family is grateful to Sylvia Santana for the tremendous help that she provided to enable him to stay in his home and maintain his quality of life, as well as to his good neighbors and the Bethany Volunteer Fire Department.

Friends may call on Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia, where military honors will be rendered at the conclusion of visitation at 8. Byron – Mr. Karl E. Bater, 80, of Byron, 25 year employee for Roehlen Engraving in Henrietta, passed away on Friday, January 24, 2014 at Crossroads House.

Mr. Bater was born August 10, 1933 in Bergen, the son of the late Ralph D. and Mildred Smith Bater.

A former member of the Moose Lodge in Churchville, American Legions in North Chili and Bergen, he will be remembered by his family as a handyman who enjoyed woodworking. He proudly served his country with the United States Navy from 1950-1954.

He is survived by his wife, Rose Marie Bater whom he married June 28, 1958; two sons, Karl D. Bater of Bergen and Jeffrey C. Bater of Batavia; two grandchildren, Zachary Bater of Brockport and Lovina Bater of Mississippi; his brother, Robert (Mary) Bater of Massachusetts; two sisters, Dorothy (Daniel) Flanagan of Georgia and June (Nelson) Ralston of Florida and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Oakfield – Lillian M. Scroger, 86, of Oakfield, a retired Housekeeper at Batavia Treadway Inn, passed away Tuesday, (January 21, 2014) at United Memorial Medical Center, in Batavia following a brief illness. Mrs. Scroger was born February 24, 1927 in Pottsville, PA, a daughter of the late Merritt A. and Effa (Shiery) Shingle. She was a member of the Alabama-Basom United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 626 Women’s Auxiliary in Oakfield. She enjoyed knitting, traveling, eating out at many local restaurants, especially The Caryville Inn; she greatly enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is the wife of the late Howard E. Scroger who passed away November 18, 1987. Lillian is survived by her children, Ann (Dan) Waterman of Oakfield, and John (late Jayne) Scroger of Westmont, Il; a son-in-law, Jim Wolan of Churchville; grandchildren, Ann Marie (Carl) Shetler of Alabama, Richard (Toni) Allen of Barker, James (Manisha) Wolan of Linden, NJ, Erin (Bob) Silvarole of North Chili, Christa (Tom) Jordon of Chicago, Il, and Jeff Scroger of Utah; great-grandchildren, Daniel Freeman, Michael Freeman, Carl Shetler, Michael Shetler, Kirstie Allen, Richard Allen, Rachael Allen, Zachery Hill, Kristopher Wolan, Lillian Silvarole, and Ian Jordon; a great-great grandson, Carson Shetler. Several nieces and nephews also survive. She is preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Wolan; sisters, Sarah Elizabeth Shingle, Francis Esterly (late Leroy) Gehris, and Emma Kathryn “Kit” (late Vincent) Hofmann. Batavia- Ms. Kathy Combs Snyder, 64, of Batavia, formerly of Arnot, Pennsylvania, passed away Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at her home. Ms. Snyder was born November 25, 1949 in Dansville, a daughter of the late George and Velma Barber Eisner. She is survived by her children, David (Shiela) Bement of Hillsboro, Oregon and Sharon Salitsky of Hornell; three grandchildren, Rachel Salitsky, Christina Bement-Foley and Brandon Anderson; two great-grandchildren, Grace and Haley Jo Anderson; her brother, Richard Combs of Jacksonville, Florida; two sisters, Sharon (Dominic) Cavalieri of Batavia and Dianna Sepos of Hampton, Virginia; and several nieces and nephews. There are no prior visiting hours. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be held in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Elmira.
