Mrs. Darlene A. Johnson, 60, of Batavia, died Sunday (February 2, 2014) at her home in Batavia, while under the care of Homecare & Hospice. Mrs. Johnson was born July 14, 1953 in Batavia, the daughter of the late Joseph A. and Gertrude M. (Weatherbee) Ratulowski. She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister, who enjoyed making quilts and crocheting. Survivors include one daughter, Marlene Hartford of Batavia; one son, Eugene (Virginia Lane) Johnson Jr. of Batavia; two brothers, Joseph (Cheryl) Ratulowski of Sugar Hill, GA and John A. Ratulowski of Batavia; two half-sisters, Joanne Kendall and Carlene Ball, both of Batavia; one grandson, one great-grandson and a niece and a nephew. She is the wife of the late Eugene F. Mrs. Floreen M. Hale Batavia – Mrs. Floreen M. Hale, 82, of Batavia, passed away on Friday, February 7, 2014 at United Memorial Medical Center. Mrs. Hale was born September 14, 1931 in Albion, a daughter of the late Mario and Sarah D’Orazio Papponetti. A faithful member of St. Mary’s Church in Batavia, she was a graduate of Albion High School. Mrs. Hale was a telephone operator for Bell Atlantic Telephone in Batavia. She also worked at the former St. Jerome Hospital as a switchboard operator and was an active member of the St. Jerome Guild. She was married to Edward A. Hale on May 12, 1953. They celebrated 60 years of marriage together. He passed away on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at United Memorial Medical Center. Together, they enjoyed camping, talking long drives together but most of all spending time with their family in their home. Many of their winters were spent in their Florida Home. She is survived by her children, Ricky (Joanni) Hale of East Bethany and Renee Hirsh of San Diego, California; three grandsons, Kyle Hirsh, Kevin (Macie) Hirsh and Keenan Hirsh, all of San Diego, California; her brother, Harry (Susan) Papponetti of Albion and Marleen (Richard) Fuller DeCarlo of Albion; and several nieces and nephews. She attended Batavia High School and enjoyed going to and watching NASCAR races. She also loved spending time with her grandkids. Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Roy E. McClurg of Stafford; two sons, Glenn E. (Odette) McClurg of LeRoy and Douglas R. McClurg of Pavilion; one daughter, Janet G. Johannes of Stafford; two brothers, Alex Krywy of Morganville and John (Pat) Krywy of Ogden Center; one sister, Betty (Frank) Loncz of Stafford; six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Bergen – Leon F. Fox, 84, of Bergen, a foreman at J.G. Turner in Rochester prior to his retirement, died Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at Rochester General Hospital. Mr. Fox was born February 28, 1929 in Lyons, a son of the late Leon G. and Mary V. (Keif) Fox. He was a member of St. Brigid’s Church in Bergen. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis (Forsyth) Fox whom he married on September 2, 1950; 3 daughters, Ann (David) Terrinoni of San Antonio, TX, Jane Gracie of LeRoy, and Susan (Michael) Grasso of Batavia; a daughter-in-law, Amie Batz Fox of Bergen; 2 sisters, Marjorie Hohn of FL and Joan Zorn of Brockport; a sister-in-law, H. Barre – Richard F. “Rick” Newton, Jr., 57, of Barre, a fork lift technician at BMH in Buffalo, died Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at his home in Barre. Mr. Newton was born July 28, 1956 in Medina, a son of the late Richard F. and Carol (Giambatista) Newton, Sr. He was a graduate of Medina High School. He enjoyed hunting, farming, car racing and his grandson. As an avid dirt oval track car racer, he was a member of D.I.R.T. Motorsport, nominated for the F.O.A.R. Score Fan Club, Raced Asphalt, Dirt Street Stock late model, 6 cylinder modified, sportsman modified, and 358 modified. He won over 70 feature races and was 1996 Track Champion. Survivors include his wife Dawn Fisher Newton of Batavia, 2 daughters, Angelique Newton of Oakfield, and Erica (Brian) Covert of Morrisville, PA; a son, Ricky (Ashley) Newton of Oakfield; 2 grandchildren, Lucas Newton and Kennedy Covert; 2 brothers, Joseph (Elaine) Newton of Medina and James Newton of NJ; 2 sisters, Toni (James) Dunn and Gerri Schultz, both of Albion; several nieces and nephews. Batavia – Miss D. Jeanne Ager, was born in Batavia on November 3, 1920 and passed away at the Genesee County Nursing Home on February 23, 2014. She was the daughter of the late Gregory and Minerva Ager. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Betty Grinnell and Eileen Barton and her brother Gregory Ager, her niece, Jacqueline Stokes Miller and her nephew, Paul Barton. She is survived by her sister Frances Stokes and brother-in-law Donald Stokes with whom she vacationed with for many years on Sanibel Island and Cape Cod. She was a loving second mother to her nieces and nephews, Tom, Terry and Ted Stokes; J.G., David and Keith Grinnell. Also survived by their spouses, Deb and Barb Stokes; Jean, Marilyn and Karen Grinnell; Lloyd Miller and Jeff Fletcher. She is also survived by several great and great-great nieces and nephews. Although born with physical disabilities, she lived a full and active life. Batavia – Mr. Leonard Charles Guarino, age 94, formerly of Oakfield, passed away on Friday, February 28, 2014 as a resident of the New York State Veteran’s Home in Batavia. Leonard was born April 11, 1919, in Mount Morris, the youngest of ten children to the late Joseph and Mary Muscato Guarino. He served honorably in World War II as a member of the United States Navy and again in the Korean War as a member of the United States Marine Corps. Leonard was a member of the Teamsters Union working at Empire State Motor Express in Lime Rock where he retired from in 1980. He was a loving and devoted husband and father who deeply loved his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After his retirement, he enjoyed outdoor activities especially fishing, mowing his kids’ lawns, building screen houses, gardening, spending time telling his stories and sharing his tremendous sense of humor and jokes. In 1992, Leonard and his late wife, Margaret, became members of the Oakfield Recreation Club and established their summer residence there, keeping their winter home in Florida. He is predeceased by his wife of 40 years, Margaret E. (Underwood) Wadams Guarino. He is survived by his children, Terry (Valerie) Wadams of Oakfield, Debbie (Roger) Cornell of Retsof, Gary (Sue) Wadams of Oakfield, Pamela Wadams of Batavia and Lennie Colley of Batavia; ten grandchildren, Carrie Monachino of Oakfield, Mark (Stefanie) Wadams of Mahopac, Ronald (Tracy) Cornell of Rochester, Todd Cornell of Rochester, Jeremy Cornell of Retsof, Tara (Vince) Fasso of Livonia, Jaime (Scott) Kelly of Perry, Brandi (Jon) Suro of Getzville, Nicole Hurlbutt of Batavia and Brena Hurlbutt of Cheektowaga; 17 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Fredrick M. Wind, 45, of East Rochester, died Monday (March 10, 2014) at his mother’s home in Stafford. Fredrick was born December 12, 1968 in Lackawanna, a son of Bonnie Roth-Kinney of Stafford and the late Warren Wind. A veteran, he served during Desert Shield with the United States Navy and also enjoyed fishing. She was a LPN for the LeRoy Village Green Nursing Home along with the Batavia Health Care Center and she loved to take care of people. Waterport – Miss Annabel Louise Winters, 81, of Waterport, went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at the Batavia Health Care Center. Miss Winters was born February 21, 1932 in Wyckoff, New Jersey, a daughter of the late Samuel and Florence Morgan Winters. She graduated from Ramsey High School in 1949 and received a three year certificate from the Providence Bible Institute in 1953. Miss Winters joined Bible Centered Ministries in 1953 and since that time has served faithfully in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and later in New York State. She has ministered to young and old through Bible Clubs, Mailbox Clubs, Pre-school Club and Nursing Home Ministry. She retired on October 1, 2013. A member of East Shelby Community Bible Church in Medina, she devoted her life to teaching children about her Lord by conducting Bible studies for many children in Niagara and Orleans counties. She is survived by three nephews, Thomas Taylor and Charles Taylor of California and Henry Winters of South Carolina and several special friends, Roberta DiRamio, Carol Lonnen, Paula Nesbitt, Cheryl Olsen and Susanne Papalia. She is predeceased by her brothers Henry Winters of Colorado, Howard Winters of Ohio, her sister, Harriet Winters Taylor of California and her dear friend in the Lord Vera M. Clark. Floyd Douglas Betters, “Buck” passed away Friday (February 14, 2014). Floyd Douglas Betters, “Buck” was born on September 7, 1919 in Mineville, NY to Leila Mae Christian Betters and William L. Betters. At the age of four, his family moved to Oakfield, NY, and Buck graduated from Oakfield-Alabama High School at the age of 16. Within a year he became the youngest manager in the history of the Western Union in Bloomfield, NJ. After four years at Western Union, Buck was recruited by Mr. Sherwin Haxton to enter the emerging institutional and industrial food business at G. W. Haxton Co, back in Oakfield. He met his future wife, Margaret S. King who was employed as a corporate secretary at G.W. Haxton. They married in 1941 and that same year Buck was drafted into the U.S. Army and sent to Signal Corps Officer School. Assigned to the U.S. Army Air Corps, Lt. Betters served in Guam and was promoted to Captain just prior to the end of WWII. Following the war, Buck returned to Oakfield, NY and became a VP of Haxton’s. In 1950 Buck was recalled to active duty during the Korean War – and served as Commanding Officer of the Engineer Battalion, and on the staff of the 5th Army headquartered in Chicago, IL. He was once again released from duty in 1951 and resumed his post at Haxton’s until March 15, 1956 when he and Margaret started Betters Food Sales Inc., a food brokerage business in wholesale frozen and canned foods. Betters Food Sales, Inc. opened five offices in the US, 3 branches in Europe, and later even added a branch in China. Corporate headquarters moved from the front porch of their home on 13 Maple Ave., Oakfield to Main Street, Oakfield, NY Betters Food clients included notable food processing firms such as Kraft Foods, Tropicana, Welch’s, Smuckers, Gallo, Birdseye, Sealtest, P.J. Taggares Co. and MacDonalds. With his son Bill, they were the largest exporters of Mexican strawberries under the Land O’Sun Packing label. After establishing Betters Food Sales, Buck then extended his brand by starting World Wide Foods in Warden, Washington to distribute frozen French fries under the “King of the West” label. Successful diversification efforts continued with the acquisition of Blodgett Foods in Perry, NY; Scotch Game Call in Elba, NY; Brown Fruit Farms in Lyndonville, NY; and Valverde Laboratories, and Eastman Development Corp in Oakfield, NY. Through a separate venture, Marbuck Stables, Buck and his wife owned harness racing horses. He also had 50% ownership of two horse breeding operations for standard bred horses – Adios Day Syndicate and John A. Hanover Syndicate. After a very successful business career, Mr. Betters decided to retire in 2009 after his 90th birthday. Mr. Betters was an active member of the Presbyterian Church in Oakfield, NY and was the co-founder of the Men’s Prayer Breakfast in Oakfield, NY. In the 1970’s, Floyd served as a special envoy on behalf of the World Wide Presidential Prayer Breakfast in Vietnam and Cambodia, and met with heads of state throughout East Asia and Russia. Among his numerous community and business leadership contributions, Mr. Betters also served as director and majority owner of Cablevision Co. in US and Haiti, on the School of Food, Hotel and Travel Management Board for RIT, and was an active member of Ducks Unlimited, the American Legion and Gideon’s. Floyd has always insisted that he “was the luckiest man in the world” to have been able to live his chosen life and support his family. He loved to travel, drive his Lincoln to his home on Upper Saranac, take long boat rides, and was the ultimate tinkerer – collecting and refinishing antiques and tackling building and repair projects of all sizes. Floyd D. Betters is survived by his son Paul D. (Penny) Betters of Hendersonville, NC, daughter Bonita L. (Gary Reed) Betters-Reed of Wilmot, NH, daughter-in law Elaine Betters of Oakfield, NY, brother Ralph (sister-in-law late Gloria Betters) Betters of San Diego, CA, and sister Beverly (brother-in-law late Laverne Fisher) Fisher of Batavia, NY, twelve grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. His wife Margaret King Betters and sons William and Marvin predeceased him. Floyd was the brother and brother in law of the late Marshall (wife Agnes of Oakfield, NY) Betters, Gordon (wife Betty of Rochester NY) Betters and Robert (wife Dorothy of Batavia, NY) Betters. He was additionally blessed by the love of many nephews and nieces, extended family members, and dear friends. Stafford – Mr. Adelbert H. “Bud” Snell, 92, died Monday, March 10, 2014 at the New York State Veteran’s Home in Batavia. Mr. Snell was born July 16, 1921 in Elba, the son of the late Oscar H. and Helen Timmerman Snell. He was a World War II Army Air Corp veteran. Stationed in England with the 8th Air Force, 44th Squad, he flew 33 missions as an aerial gunner aboard a B-24. After discharge as a Staff Sergeant he returned to Stafford to be employed by the town highway department, eventually retiring after serving 26 years as the superintendent. He was a life member of the Stafford Fire Department and the Stafford Exempts, former member of the Elba Grange and board member of Godfrey’s Pond Association. His wife, Edna M. Lonnen Snell died April 28, 2005. Survivors include three sons; Gary (Linda) Snell and Douglas (Sherry) Snell, both of Stafford, Richard (Selena) Snell of Greece, NY; 8 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren and 1 step great grandchild. Elba – Mr. Lawrence T. Bly, 93, of Elba, NY, a maintenance worker at US Postal Service, Batavia, died Friday, March 14, 2014 at New York State Veteran’s Home in Batavia. Mr. Bly was born October 13, 1920 in St. Augustine, TX, the son of the late Charles and Lavania (Anderson) Bly. He served during WWII war with the US Navy from 1938 to 1944 and was a survivor of the sinking of the USS Quincy (CA-39) at the Battle of Savo Island in 1942. He earned two purple hearts for injuries sustained in conflict. He attended the Elba First Presbyterian Church, was a farmer in Attica for many years and enjoyed woodworking and his grandchildren. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth “Betty” Bernhardt Bly who died in 1967 and the late Wilma C. (Brayley) Bly who died in 2011. Survivors include 4 daughters, Elizabeth M. (Arlis) Bly of Livingston, KY, Sharon A. Bly of Naugatuck, CT, Cheryl A. (Allan) Totten and Mary Lou (Kevin) Andrews, both of Elba; a son, Thomas L. (Sally) Coughlin of Pavilion; a brother: Earl (Wanda) Bly of San Antonio, TX; 9 grandchildren 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Lawrence D. Batavia – Mrs. Anne N. Zickl, 76, passed away March 16, 2014 at Highland Hospital in Rochester. She was born September 1, 1937, in Batavia, a daughter of the late Robert E. and Helen Stull Noonan. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Randolph P. Zickl; sons, Robert R. (Mary Ellen Welch) Zickl, R. Philip Zickl, Jr., William G. (Rachel Siverling) Zickl and Donald E. Gugel; grandchildren, Sean M. Czaja, Kathleen A. Czaja, Meghan R. Zickl, Daneale M. Zickl, Helen E. Zickl, Joseph R. Zickl, Robert S. Zickl, James B. Zickl and Claire S. Zickl; a sister, Suzanne R. Noonan; five cousins and many cherished friends. Anne was an active member of the community for most of her life, contributing her time and talents to a number of causes and institutions, most notably those whose aim was to serve others. She served on the Human Rights Commission, the Batavia Housing Council and the Migrant Child Day Care Center Program. She was a volunteer and board member of St. Jerome’s Hospital Guild, the Holland Purchase Historical Society and Museum and All Babies Cherished. For a number of years she worked with young children through the Primary Mental Health Project within Batavia Public Schools. From 1985 until 1991, on behalf of native Batavian Terry Anderson’s sister, Peggy Say, Anne coordinated the many individual and group efforts throughout the nation seeking the release of Mr. Anderson by his Middle Eastern captors. Anne routinely opened her home and heart to others, providing a temporary home when such was needed, and not letting a birth, illness or funeral pass without an outpouring of counsel, concern and an abundance of delectable meals. She is well remembered by many for her devotion and for her many acts of kindness. Her funeral Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m., Thursday, March 20th at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, 303 East Main Street, Batavia. Mary Lloyd
Oakfield – Mary Elizabeth “Betsy” Lloyd left us to be with her parents, Joan and Ernest Lloyd and nephew, Alan Mosier on March 20, 2014. A graduate of Akron Central School and SUNY Brockport, Betsy was a woman of many talents and interests which she lovingly shared. She loved to cook (her cookie platters are legendary), enjoyed antiquing, and being Aunt B, but her biggest passion was digging in the dirt. An avid gardener, Betsy lived for summer when she could tend her gardens. She extended the season by starting plants from seed (for everyone’s gardens) and accumulating a large assortment of house plants. Betsy will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her husband, Michael Spadacino, sister Laurie (Daryl) Mosier, niece Patience (Joshua) Kinney, and nephew Aaron (Martha) Mosier. She is also survived by a brother, James Lloyd. Friends are invited to join the family to celebrate Betsy’s life at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at Burdett & Sanford Funeral Home 11 Maple Ave., Oakfield, NY. Memorials may be made to the Oakfield Fire Dept.

Frances Kielbasa
Elba – Mrs. Frances J. Kielbasa, 82, of Elba, passed away on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at Highland Hospital. Mrs. Kielbasa was born September 21, 1931 in Alexander, a daughter of the late John and Caroline Piasecki Idzik. Predeceased by her husband, John N. Kielbasa in 1995; sisters, Stella Piasecki and Genevieve Wilkosz; brothers, Frank Idzik and Stanley Piasecki. Surviving are her children, Frank (Joy) Kielbasa of Elba, Donna (Edgar) Lougheed of Byron and Mark Kielbasa of Oakfield, six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and Babci to more than we can count. She woke to a good cup of coffee; rose to do a hard day’s work, sat for a cold drink (or two) at night then knelt before God to thank Him for all her blessings. Friends may call on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Saint Padre Pio Parish, Our Lady of Fatima Worship Site, 65 South Main Street, Elba. Burial will follow in Maple Lawn Cemetery, Elba. Life is short; In Frances’ memory, tell someone you love them, read to a child, hold someone’s hand, hug a friend, plant a flower, cherish each day.
