Gloria V. Gomez, 93, of Batavia, died Sunday (March 30, 2014) at Crossroads House in Batavia. Mrs. Gomez was born March 7, 1921 in East Bethany, a daughter of the late Frank and Rose (Azzi) Schiavi. A member of Ascension Parish, she was a woman of amazing faith throughout her life and was an active member of the Notre Dame prayer group. Gloria’s biggest joy was being with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed crocheting, traveling, cooking, dancing, and had an insatiable sweet tooth for chocolate and blackberry brandy. Survivors include her children, Linda (Bill) Walsh of Scottsdale, AZ, Suzanne Fuerschbach of Marshfield, MA, Gloria (Amos) Williams of Batavia, Paul Gomez of Batavia, Peter Gomez of Batavia, Thomas Gomez of Batavia, Joseph (Helen) Gomez of Batavia and Anita (fiancé Dan Youll) Ferns of Rochester; five sisters, Veronica George of Batavia, Pearl Monteau of Rochester, Rose DiLaura of Batavia, Loretta Lamendola of LeRoy and Lorraine Hofmaster of Batavia and eighteen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her first husband, Jose Gomez and her second husband, Louis Scotto. Mrs. Gomez is the mother of the late John Gomez (infant) and Dolores Gomez-Durham; grandmother of the late Jordan Gomez; mother-in-law of the late Edward J. Ferns Jr. and sister of the late Clara Albanese, Anne Barcelona, Egidio (Jiggs) Schiavi, Frank Schiavi, and Charles Schiavi. Calling hours are Thursday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Bohm-Calarco-Smith Funeral Home, 308 East Main Street, Batavia. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday at Ascension Parish, 15 Sumner Street, Batavia. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Batavia. Walter Lang

Batavia – Walter R. Lang, Sr., 85, of Batavia, entered into rest Tuesday, (March 25, 2014) at United Memorial Medical Center, in Batavia. Walter Lang was born August 6, 1928 in Batavia, a son of the late Georg and Anna (Gauger) Lang. Walter graduated from Batavia High School and was a lifelong resident of Batavia. Over the years, Walt used his masonry skills to help numerous family members, friends, and neighbors to beautify their homes. He was a life time member of the New Apostolic Church of Batavia and was proud to have volunteered his time and talents in helping to construct the church itself. Walter served his country honorably with the Army during the Korean War from 1950-1952. He was assigned to the occupation force in Europe for the majority of his term of duty due to his ability to speak fluent German. This good fortune helped him to return home without serious injury. Prior to his army service he worked as a machinist for Massey Harris. Following his discharge he became a plasterer and union mason employed by George Stratton Contracting. For the final 26 years of his career Walt worked for the Genesee County Highway Department where he continued to use his masonry skills. He retired in 1998. He is the husband of Elizabeth (Kies) Lang, whom he married October 16, 1955. Along with his wife, Walter is survived by his children, Walter (Susan) Lang, Jr. of Batavia, David (Christina) Lang of Southbury, CT, and Gregory (Eileen) Lang of Lancaster; grandchildren, Elizabeth Lang of Buffalo, Erin Lang of Batavia, David B. Lang, Meredith Lang and Kevin Walter Lang all of Buffalo, Nicholas Lang and Evan Lang both of Lancaster; a brother, Ernest (Shirley) Lang of Stafford; a sister, Ruth (late Herbert) Hemry of Bergen; and a brother-in-law, Fred Born of Rochester. Several nieces and nephews also survive. He is preceded in death by his sisters, Helen Born and Lydia Lang. There will be no prior visitation. Walter’s memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday (April 5, 2014) at the New Apostolic Church, 314 Pine Ridge Road Cheektowaga. Flowers are gratefully declined. Those wishing to may make memorial contributions to the Veteran’s Hospital of Batavia. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery, Batavia.

Bergen – Robert A. Letter, 63, of Bergen, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, (April 1, 2014) at his home, in Bergen. Mr. Letter was born January 28, 1951 in Rochester, a son of Veronica (Herbst) Rapp of Hilton, and the late Robert J. Letter. He served his country honorably with the Army and was gifted in repairing pianos and organs. He enjoyed working with computers and was a true lover of animals, especially Isabelle. He was an avid Buffalo Bills and Syracuse Orange Basketball. He loved the outdoors and his family. He will be remembered as a loyal and helping person. Surviving along with his mother are his siblings, Lawrence Letter of Atlanta, GA, Richard (Bonnie) Letter of Lake Villa, IL, Kathi (late Eric) Bucktooth of Rochester, Steven (Carol) Letter of Kent, WA, David (Dawn) Letter of Mechanicsville, VA. Several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends also survive. There will be no prior visitation. Bob’s Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday (April 7, 2014) at St. Brigid’s Church, 18 Gibson Street, Bergen. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Genesee Cancer Assistance, Inc., 16 Bank Street, Batavia, NY 14020. Burial, with full military honors will be in St. Brigid’s Cemetery, Bergen.

Bergen – Mrs. Margaret M. Foster, 82, of Bergen, school bus driver for the Churchville-Chili School District for over 30 years, passed away on Monday, March 31, 2014 at Unity Hospital. Mrs. Foster was born October 19, 1931 in Spencerport, a daughter of the late Raymond and Edna Carson Maier. She is predeceased by her son Ron Arva who passed away in 2013, her grandson Eric Wall who passed away in 2011 and her five siblings. She is survived by her husband of 31 years, Earle W. Foster; her children, Michael (Janet) Arva of Greece, James (Kathy) Arva of Concord, California and Marjorie Wall of Bergen; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Charles, Francis, Donald, Virginia, Theresa and Laurie and several nieces and nephews. A devoted and devout Catholic, she was a proud mother and grandmother who dearly loved her family. A devoted aunt, she was known by her nieces and nephews as “Aunt Mitzi”. She was a gifted and natural athlete who was always kept herself active. She enjoyed bowling, gardening, working in her flower beds, poetry and baking. Friends may call on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 51 South Lake Avenue, Bergen. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Brigid’s Church, 18 Gibson Street, Bergen. Burial will be in North Byron Cemetery, Byron. Mohney, 83, of Batavia, NY, a medical secretary at the former Genesee Memorial Hospital in Batavia prior to her retirement in 1987, died Monday, April 7, 2014 at Genesee County Nursing Home in Batavia, NY. Mrs. Mohney was born June 1, 1930 in Dora, PA, a daughter of the late William and Gladys (Delp) Knapp. She was a member of the Alexander United Methodist Church, a former board member and co-chair of the Best Year’s Fellowship at the Wesleyan Church. She was a Den Mother and Girl Scout Leader for 13 years in Eden, Church School Teacher and Children’s Division Coordinator, WSM Treasurer for 10 years, Circle Chairman and President, along wither her husband, of the Couples’ Club (formerly the Clockwatchers) of the EUM Church, served on the Finance Committee and Chairperson of Religious Education and Adult Ministries at the Paradise United Methodist Church in New Mexico. She Worked with Mothers March of Dimes in Batavia and Eden, was a Junior Choir mother and Treasurer of the Teenage Mothers Club, ELMC Senior and UMF Advisor with EUMC Church. Her family was honored as “1962 Family of the Year” at the EUM Church. She worked as the Certified Unit Secretary at the Presbyterian Hospital in NM and also worked at Tri-County Hospital in Gowanda and for Dr. Martin in Eden. Her husband, Guy M. Mohney, died July 15, 2009. Survivors include 3 sons, Chanley (Debbie) Mohney of VA, Duane (Annamarie) Mohney of PA and Dwight (Debbie) Mohney of KY; 2 daughters, Sonya Mohney and Sharon Hills, both of Alexander, 3 sisters, Leona Davis of FL, Joyce Toven, of PA and Cleora Schaffer of OH; 5 grandchildren, 2 step-grand-sons, and several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Friends may call on Wednesday from 4-6 p.m. at H.E. Turner & Co, Inc., 403 East Main St., Batavia, NY and from 11 to 12 p.m. Friday at Evangelical United Methodist Church, 30 S. White St. Brookville, PA., where services will be at 12 p.m. Friday. Peggy Wilson

Byron/Oakfield – Mrs. Peggy D. Wilson, 94, of Oakfield, passed away on Saturday, April 5, 2014 at Highland Hospital after a short illness. Mrs. Wilson was born August 7, 1919 in Reading, England, a daughter of the late William and Lilly Davis. After immigrating to the United States, Lilly married George Patten. George married Sally Perkins and Peggy cared lovingly for them in their older years. A 66-year member of Byron Presbyterian Church, she taught Sunday school, weekday religion and vacation bible school. She was a life member of the South Byron Fireman’s Auxiliary and a former Girl Scout troop leader in Byron. She enjoyed quilting, crochet, knitting, cooking and gardening. Peggy and her mother arrived in the United States through Ellis Island on April 8, 1926. She and her mother became naturalized citizens in 1947. Peggy and her husband raised two grandchildren, Tammy and Eric Taylor, whom provided her with lots of joy and love through the years. Peggy enjoyed her last 10 years at School House Manor. She made many friendships and enjoyed being able to be independent. Peggy was called “Grandma Peggy” by her daughter-in-laws family with great love and joy. Peggy in recent years enjoyed to go out to eat with her family at Miss Batavia Diner. She was always greeted with a smile and a warm welcome. During her illness Miss Batavia assisted the family with Peggy’s favorite drink to go, their Raspberry Ice Tea. Her husband, Edgar B. Wilson, passed away on October 26, 2002. She is survived by her children, Robert (Beth) Wilson of Byron and Dorothy Clement of Kansas City, MO; several grandchildren including Tammy (Chip) Longabaugh of Slaterville, Kimberly (Devin) Borget of Lewiston, Karen (Rich) Volk of Oakfield; several great-grandchildren including Ashley Taylor of Rochester, Lisa Marie Taylor of Batavia, Sean McConnell of Slaterville, William Borget of Lewiston, Milo Volk of Oakfield; several great-great-grandchildren including Eli Rose Taylor of Rochester; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great-nephews and cousins. She was the grandmother of the late Eric D. Taylor, who passed away on January 5, 2001. She was the great-grandmother to the late Stephanie Lynn Tooley, who passed away on September 25, 2003. Friends may call on Tuesday, April 8 from 4 to 8p.m. at the Burdett & Sanford Funeral Home, 11 Maple Avenue, Oakfield, where services will be held on Wednesday, April 9th at 10a.m. Burial will be in North Byron Cemetery, Byron. Batavia – David Duane McLennan, born March 15, 1951 in Rogers City, Michigan, died after a long illness at United Memorial Medical Center on Saturday, August 24, 2013. Survived by his longtime companion, June Ellis; his children, David, Katie and Kristin McLennan; grandchildren, Justin, Drew and Morgan McLennan; step-children, Tammy Nanni, Terry Penders, Kathy Park, Lynn Sanders and Wayne Ellis; 9 step-grandchildren and one step great-granddaughter; sisters, Nadine Ciarkowski and Karen Vance and last but not least his four legged companion, Precious. David had a lifelong passion for baking, photography and music. He graduated from Youngstown University in Ohio. His memorial service will be held on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. CHILI – Marion T. Hill, 90, of Chili, formerly of Bergen, a retired librarian at LeRoy Central School, went to be with her Lord on Thursday evening (July 25, 2013) with family members by her side. Mrs. Hill was born May 31, 1923, in Perry, a daughter of the late Ralph and Marion (Palmer) Traber. Marion was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bergen for 52 years, was a former member of several library organizations, including the Bergen Library. She enjoyed reading, gardening, baking, and knitting. She was proud to knit for her grandchildren as well as the babies of Strong Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Dr. Norman J. Hill, who passed away in 2001 after nearly 51 years of marriage. Surviving are her children, Gregory Hill of Rochester, Nelson (Karen) Hill of Chili, Larry (Karlene) Hill of Chili, and Ruth (Thomas) Beattie of Cary, NC; grandchildren, Jason (April) Hill of Irondequoit, Matthew (Helene) Hill of Spring Arbor, MI, Julie Hill of Gates, Kristin (Joshua) Campbell of Gates, Kimberly (Ryan) McDanel of Perry, Jennifer (Mark) Pellon of San Diego, CA, Rachael and Erin Beattie, both of Cary, NC; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Della Traber of Farmington and Penny Hill of Ohio. Several nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive. She is preceded in death by a brother, Ralph Traber, Jr., and a sister, Libby Jones. There will be no prior visitation. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Saturday (October 26, 2013) at 11:00 AM at the First Presbyterian Church of Bergen. Churchville – Kendra Leeann “Sissy” Haacke, 34, of Churchville, formerly of Oakfield, died Thursday, April 17, 2014 at Unity Health System’s Park Ridge Hospital, in Rochester. Miss Haacke was born November 11, 1979 in Rochester, the daughter of Kenneth L. and Mary Ann (Groden) Haacke of Oakfield. She graduated from Oakfield Alabama High School in 1998 and from Alfred State, with her Bachelors in Architectural Science. She attended St. Christopher’s Church in North Chili and was a former member and altar server at St. Cecilia’s Church. She is sadly missed by her parents; 2 brothers, Christopher (Melissa) Haacke of Oakfield and Jason Haacke of Bradenton, FL; 2 nieces, several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Friends are invited to attend her Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Padre Pio Parish, St. Cecilia’s Site, 56 Maple Ave., Oakfield. Elba – Marjorie M. Bezon, 80, of Elba, passed away suddenly Friday, (April 18, 2014) in Elba. Mrs. Bezon was born October 7, 1933 in Brockport, a daughter of the late Harry and Helen (Marone) Fischer, Sr. Marjorie was a lifelong member of St. Padre Pio Parish and its Altar and Rosary Society. She was an active member of the Elba Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing cards with her friends involved in the Elba Grange. She greatly enjoyed spending time outside, working in her lawn and flower garden. She will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother who would help anyone in need. Her family was the most important thing in her life. She will be missed by all who knew her. Mrs. Bezon is the wife of the late Stanley Bezon who passed away in 1990. Marjorie is survived by her children, Frank (Bonnie) Bezon of Barre Center, Marylou (John) Townsend of Elba, and Daniel (Elizabeth) Bezon of Albion; grandchildren, Martin (Elizabeth) Bezon of Barre Center, Terrence (Jennifer) Bezon of Gates, Samantha Bezon of Barre Center, Daniel Townsend of Elba, Brennan (Jesse) Bezon of Corfu, Tiffany Bezon of Barre Center, and Nicholas (Tasha) Bezon of GA; 6 great-grandchildren; a brother, Harry (Charlotte) Fischer, Jr. of PA; and a sister, Shirley (Bill) Rowles of Albion. Several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends also survive along with her beloved Jack Russell, Stosh. She is preceded in death by a brother, Robert Fischer and a sister, Betty (late Edward) Buczek. Batavia – Patricia A. Conway, 71, of Batavia, passed away Thursday, (April 24, 2014) at United Memorial Medical Center, in Batavia following a brief illness. Mrs. Conway was born November 9, 1942 in Batavia, a daughter of the late Bernard and Doris (Stringham) Twardowski, Sr. Pat enjoyed spending time with her family, especially going for drives with her sister. Those that knew her will remember her for her love of Tupperware and her desire to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. She lived for her grandchildren. She was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and sister. Pat is the wife of Lawrence C. Conway. The two were married June 27, 1987. Along with her husband, she is survived by her daughters, Carol Griswold of Oakfield, and Terri King of East Concord; 5 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Frances (Arthur) Bowen of Batavia, Steven (Hyo) Twardowski of Tacoma, WA, Michael (JoAnne) Twardowski, Jeffrey Twardowski, Bernard Twardowski, Jr., and Doreen Bogue all of Batavia. John Ralph Sanders, 75, of East Bethany, passed on Thursday (April 24, 2014) at the Genesee County Nursing Home in Batavia. Mr. Sanders was born February 3, 1939 in Batavia, a son of the late Ralph E. and Ruth (Torrey) Sanders. John was a lifelong Bethany farmer, having retired from LorRob Farm in 2014. John served on the Bethany Town Zoning Board of Appeals and was a trustee and moderator of the official board at the West Bethany Baptist Church. He was a 1957 graduate of Alexander School. John was known for his infectious laugh and generous spirit. Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Linda (Roth) Warner Sanders; six children, David (Dale) Warner of Rochester, Tammy (Vincent) Foster of Attica, Penny (Mark) Riekstins of S.A., Australia, Shelley (Greg) Shultz of Camden, NY, Mary Jane (Dr. William) Coles of St. Croix, V.I. and Darcy (James) Slusser of Silver Springs; a sister, Alice (Richard) Good of Hurst, TX, mother-in-law, Jane Howard of LeRoy, several grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and special friends Steve Breckenridge and Roland Cox. Batavia – Freda H. Churchill, 80, of Batavia, passed away Wednesday, (April 23, 2014) at her home, in Batavia, under the care of Hospice and her loving family. Mrs. Churchill was born December 5, 1933 in Batavia, a daughter of the late Fred E. and Lorraine (Ellis) Hale. She was a member of Oakfield-Alabama Baptist Church, an avid bowler and a devout football fan. Her favorite teams were the Dallas Cowboys and the Buffalo Bills; in that order. She will be remembered as a strong, active woman who marched to the beat of her own drum. She is the wife of the late Donald H. Churchill who passed away July 29, 2013. Freda is survived by her daughters, Chris Churchill of Stuart, Fl, Vicky Churchill of Buffalo, and Charley (Jim) Northup of Byron; 6 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; a sister, Theresa Roberts of Jupiter, FL; a sister-in-law, Marjorie (Richard) Walls of Elba. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Along with her husband, she is preceded in death by a grandson, Jayson Sullivan. Honoring Freda’s wishes, there will be no visitation. ELBA – Gertrude M. Schad, 88, of Elba passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday (April 22, 2014) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. She was born Feb. 13, 2926 in Michigan, a daughter of the late Charles and Emma (Kelly) Schad. Gertrude graduated from Alexander Central School and Nursing School. She was a registered nurse and anesthesiologist for more than 33 years, working at Rochester General, Highland Hospital and Willcare. She was very active in Elba Ladies Auxiliary, loved to travel, bowl and gardening. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-granddaughter. Ms. Schad was predeceased by three brothers, Charles, Paul and John Schad, one sister, June; a great-grandson, Michael C. Schad and her longtime friend, Charles Allen. Survivors include a son, Michael (Karen) Schad of Elba; grandchildren, Michelle and Michael Schad of Elba; great-granddaughter, Haylee Breemes of Elba; two sisters, Catherine Schad of Albion and Patricia Wright of Batavia; niece, Rebecca (late Joseph) Valentine of Fancher and several great nieces and great-great-nieces and nephews. Her calling hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at H.E. Turner & Company Inc. Funeral Home, 403 East Main St., Batavia. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Mrs. Penders was born April 1, 1938 in Warsaw, a daughter of the late Vincent and Lorraine (Keenan) Almeter. She had also worked at the Salvation Army and enjoyed garage sales and baking cookies for many friends and organizations. She is predeceased by her husbands, Allen C. Gill who died February 22, 2004 and Edward F. Penders, who died November 12, 2010. Judith A. Sobresky, 73, of Batavia, a former resident of Pottstown, PA, died Tuesday (May 6, 2014) at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. Mrs. Sobresky was born January 30, 1941 in Conshohocken, PA, a daughter of the late Joseph and Anne (Larkin) Ominski. Judy was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who enjoyed cooking fabulous meals, mentoring her grandchildren, flowers and gardening. She devoted her life to her family, and was generous beyond measure. Judy was a confidant and friend to many, offering unconditional love, support and advice. She was a wonderful, fun loving woman who had the ability to see the humor and good in every situation. She was a phlebotomist at the former St. Jerome Hospital in Batavia, and a member of Resurrection Parish. Judy will be greatly missed. Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Edmund Sobresky of Batavia; four children, Anna (Douglas) Barnard of Byron, Judith Sobresky, Eddie Sobresky, and Kathryn Sobresky all of Batavia; grandchildren, Melissa, Violet, Olivia, Zoe, and Daniel; three brothers, Joseph (Dolores) Ominski of Norfolk, VA, John (Joanne) Ominski of Silver Springs, MD and Dan (Joan) Ominski of Gainesville, FL; three sisters, Suzy (Ben) Million of New Paltz, NY, Toni (Walt) Zapisek of Ben Salem, PA and Joanne (Charlie) Rightnour of Pottstown, PA; her friend of 40 years Mary Lou Grimes and family of Batavia, nieces, nephews, and neighbors. Mrs. Priestley was born February 1, 1915 in Manning, NY, a daughter of the late Maynard and Blanche (Ackerson) Brown. She was a 54 year member of the Bergen United Methodist Church, member of the Ivy Rebekah Lodge #51 and Past Assembly Chaplain of Rebekah Assembly. Pearl also worked as a waitress at Pat and Mac’s Diner in Bergen, White Pine Diner in Byron and as a receptionist at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home for many years. Survivors include 5 sons, Alburton (Helen) Priestley of Prescott Valley, AZ, Maynard (Patricia) Priestley of Elba, Wayne (Hildagard) Priestley of Germany, Edward Priestley of Oakfield, Terry Lee Priestley of WI; 2 daughters, Eleanor (Late Peter) Morgenberger and Dolores (Late Donald) Yeaton, both of Webster, a sister: Elsie June Rowcliffe of Elba; 25 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, 15 great-great grand-children and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
