Batavia – Mrs. Jean V. Schelle, 90, retired administrative assistant at M & T Bank in Batavia, died Friday, May 9, 2014 at the Genesee County Nursing Home. Mrs. Schelle was born April 15, 1924 in Batavia, the daughter of the late Richard and Mary (Conley) Sheer. Her husband, Arthur (Bus) Schelle, died in 2002. Survivors include one daughter, Marlene (Francis) Lambert of Rochester, a special niece, Sandra (Roger) Bohn of Batavia and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Richard Sheer, Donald Sheer, Rosemary Gonyea, Beverly Betties, Dorothy Bennett and Virginia Sheer. There will be no prior visitation. David W. Ryder, 58, of Alexander, died Tuesday (May 13, 2014) at United Memorial Medical Center, in Batavia. David was born February 15, 1956 in South Miami Beach, FL, a son of the late James and Barbara (Murray) Ryder. He enjoyed fishing, golfing and hunting and was a member of the Southside White Tail Club. David was an assistant track supervisor at the New Jersey Sports and Expo Authority in Rutherford, New Jersey. Survivors include lifetime partner, Cindy Mueller of Alexander; one brother, Michael Ryder of New Jersey; two sisters, Joanie Hill and Patricia Ryder, both of Texas and five nieces and nephews. Bergen – Mr. Richard T. Maher, 86, of Bergen, passed away on Friday, May 16, 2014 at the Leo Center for Caring. Mr. Maher was born September 2, 1927 in Riga, a son of the late Clarence and Eileen Lawler Maher. A graduate of Bergen High School, Mr. Maher was a lifelong farmer and lifetime member of St. Brigid’s Church. He is survived by his brother, James (Ann) Maher of Bergen; his sister, Mary (late John) O’Rourke of Rochester; his brother-in-law, John (late Theresa) Keenan of Rochester and several nieces and nephews. Jeffrey Muntz
Oakfield – Jeffrey E. Muntz, 31, of Oakfield, a Fork Lift Operator at US Gypsum, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, (May 15, 2014) at Medina Memorial Health Care System, in Medina. Mr. Muntz was born March 28, 1983 in Batavia, a son of Roy and Shelly (Waite) Muntz, Jr. of Oakfield. He greatly enjoyed fishing, riding his wheeler, and his dogs. Jeff had an incredible sense of humor. He was a practical jokester who loved to laugh and make others laugh. He had a heart of gold, and would help anyone he could. Jeff will be remembered for his belief that you only live once, for his love of pizza, and most of all, for his smile. He is the husband of Lindsay Ryan-Muntz, of Bergen. The two were married June 18, 2011. Surviving along with his wife and parents are his brothers, Roy Muntz, III of Batavia, Alan and Robert Muntz both of Oakfield; maternal grandparents, Darwin Waite of NC, and Doris Waite of Oakfield; paternal grandparents, Roy and Evelyn Muntz, Sr. of Oakfield; a nephew, Roy Muntz, IV of Batavia. Several aunts, uncles, cousins, and many dear friends also survive. He is preceded in death by an uncle, Brett Waite. Batavia – Alice June Bennett, 81, of Batavia, a Registered Nurse at Genesee County Nursing Home, died Monday, May 19, 2014 at Crossroads House in Batavia. Mrs. Bennett was born June 4, 1932 in Buffalo, the daughter of the late Walter Whitcomb and Edith Dietschler Whitcomb Walker. She graduated from GCC’s Nursing Program, and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pavilion. She was active Salvation Army Ladies Auxiliary and she very much enjoyed her family, working with the elderly, crafts and was an avid reader. Her husband, Cecil Leslie Bennett, died March 26, 2008. Survivors include 5 children, Susan Hensley of Attica, Cynthia (Edward) Weas of Hanover, PA, John (late Lisa) Bennett of Mountain View, WY, Julie Bennett of Springfield, MO and Steven (Ann) Bennett of East Bethany; 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and several cousins. Kenneth Turner
Kenneth J. Turner, 94, of Spencerport, died Thursday (May 22, 2014) at the Jewish Home of Rochester. He was born July 14, 1919 in Rochester, a son of the late Edward and Ida (Benning) Turner. Ken was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Brockport and the Stafford Country Club. He was the president of Al Turner Excavating and Contracting Inc. in Spencerport. A veteran, he served with the United States Army from 1942 to 1945. Survived by his wife, Irene (VanCott) Turner of Spencerport; a daughter, Bonnie (John) Mench; three granddaughters, Jennifer (Anthony) Vigliotti, Stephanie (Cristian) Bieg and Jessica (Karl) Dubash; five great-grandchildren, John, Jacob, Nicholas, Elizabeth and Jason and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by six brothers and sisters. There are no prior calling hours and all services will be private. Burial will be in White Haven Memorial Park, Pittsford. David Gendron
Oakfield – David J. Gendron, Sr., 64, of Oakfield, a truck driver over the road for 18 years and 27 years with R&W Trucking and Excavating in Elba, passed away Friday, May 23, 2014 at his home, in Oakfield. Mr. Gendron was born November 30, 1949 in Leominster, MA, the son of the late Adrian and Frances (Scott) Gendron. He served honorably in the US Navy from 1967 to 1973 as a crew member of CVA-34 USS Oriskany during the Vietnam War. A graduated of Ayer Shirley Regional High School, he enjoyed dirt track racing, bowling at Scopano Lanes and Peterbuilt Trucks. He loved his grandchildren and his friend and companion Alex. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie (Sanders) Gendron whom he married July 15, 1992; he is also survived by four children, David (Danette) Gendron, Jr. of Oakfield, Jerome (Ellen) Peck of East Pembroke, Jamie (Dave) Woodard of Oakfield and Brandon Gendron of Oakfield; a mother-in-law, Evelyn Sanders of Batavia; two brothers, Jimmy (Debbie) Gendron and Fran (Diane) Gendron, both of MA; two sisters, Judy Platt of CA and Sue (Mike) Esilionis of MA; 10 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews. Byron – Vivian Ann Chapell, 66, of Byron, a clerk at U.S. Postal Office in Byron prior to her retirement, died Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at Leo Center for Caring, in Rochester. Mrs. Chapell was born January 5, 1948 in Frankfort, Germany, a daughter of Robert George and Kalina (Stupak) Beyer of Byron. She was a lifetime member of St. Brigid’s Church in Bergen, a 1965 graduate of Byron-Bergen School and a graduate of the Weaver Airline School in Kansas City, MO in 1966. She was the co-founder of Southwoods R.V. Resort in Byron and enjoyed gardening and attending her grandchildren’s activities. She had also retired from GE/Black & Decker. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Lester H. “Terry” Chapell, whom she married August 5, 1967; a son, Thomas (Aimee) Chapell ; a daughter, Cheryl (Chad) Huhn of Byron; 3 grandchildren, Garrett Chapell, Quinn Chapell and Grace Huhn, all of Byron; a brother, Robert (Norma) Beyer of York, PA; 2 sisters, Doris (Jarl) Boyst of Brockport and Deborah Tennity of Clay; She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Batavia – Mr. Jack E. Hanna, 73, of Batavia, formerly of Mount Morris and Avon, passed away on Friday, May 30, 2014 at the Shore Winds Nursing Home. Mr. Hanna was born June 23, 1940 in Leicester, a son of the late Allyn and Alice Williams Hanna. A 1958 graduate of Avon Central School, Mr. Hanna served with the United States Air Force from 1959-1960. Allan Ferguson, 85, of Byron, died Thursday (May 29, 2014) at home. Allan was born March 26, 1929 in Byron, a son of the late Harold and Florence (Munger) Ferguson. He owned and operated Ferguson Builders in Byron. Allan was a member of the North Bergen Presbyterian Church, American Legion, Merrill-Sacket-White Post #575 and the Masons-Hesperus Lodge, all in Bergen. A veteran, he served with the United States Army. Robert Long
Bergen – Robert S. Long, 91, of Lake Road, Bergen, died Monday, June 2, 2014 at Strong Memorial Hospital, in Rochester. Mr. Long was born October 30, 1922 in Stone Church, NY, a son of the late Frank E. and Bessie (Seward) Long. Mr. Long was a graduate of Bergen High School, class of 1941. He served in the Army in WWII and was discharged in 1946 as a Corporal in the 764th Amphibian Tractor Battalion. He was a self-employed farmer for many years in Bergen. After retiring from farming, he was employed by Box Industries in LeRoy and later at the Genesee Country Museum. He enjoyed making and demonstrating colonial brooms as well as explaining other colonial history. Mr. Long was a life member of Stone Church Presbyterian Church in Stone Church and served the Church and the Stone Church Rural Cemetery as a trustee for many years. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Elizabeth (Arnold) Long of Bergen; 2 sons, Donald (Cathy) Long of Leavenworth, KS and Richard (Suzanne) Long of Bergen; a sister, Marian Airth of Bergen; 6 grand-daughters, three great-granddaughters, 1 great-grandson and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Long enjoyed playing games with his granddaughters and great-granddaughters and Euchre with family and friends. Edward Maliszewski
Bethany- Edward Ronald Maliszewski, 60, of Bethany, passed away Thursday, (June 5, 2014) at his home, under the care of his family and HomeCare & Hospice. Mr. Maliszewski was born June 11, 1953 in Batavia, a son of the late Edward and Mary (Rutkowski) Maliszewski. Ron was a graduate of Alexander Central School, and he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from the University of Buffalo. Following his formal education, he returned to Bethany where he operated the Maliszewski Farms until 1986. After selling the farm, Ron began building houses for many years; including his own. After leaving the construction business, he attended BOCES and began working for Brach’s Machines in Batavia and was a foreman at B&B Precision in Avon. Finally, he began working as a developmental aide at the WNYDDSO Group Home in Batavia, where he retired after 10 years of service. Mr. Maliszewski was an avid Red Sox and Buffalo Bills fan. He greatly enjoyed playing fantasy football as well as Euchre. Ron was a member of the Northgate United Methodist Church and an Eagle Scout. He will be remembered for his love of life and people; especially his family. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Linda (Reisdorf) Maliszewski. The two were married July 4, 1982. Along with his wife, Ron is survived by his step-sons; Jason Clough of East Amherst, and William (Laurie) Clough of Simpsonville, SC; his grandchildren, Danielle (Steve) Dispenza of Batavia, Pfc. William Clough, Sara Clough, and Emily Clough all of Simpsonville, SC; two great-grandchildren, Dominick and Julianna Dispenza both of Batavia; sisters-in-law, Jeanette Reisdorf of East Concord, Lolette (Jim) Hittle of Alexander, Ellen (Mike) MacArthur of Conesus, and Ann (Bob) Rugnetta of Spring Hill, FL. Several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends also survive. He is preceded in death by his step-daughter, Kathleen Clough, who passed away in 2001 and his brother in law, Bob Reisdorf. Margaret “Maggie” Mary Robbins, 83, of Rochester and formerly of Byron, died Friday (June 13, 2014) after a brief illness. Maggie was born August 24, 1930 in Buffalo, a daughter of the late Hebert P. and Cecilia (Zeiss) Rung. A member of Saint Padre Pio Parish, Maggie was a lifetime member of the Batavia Area Herb Society. She loved gardening, plants and flowers. Maggie enjoyed poker, bocce and yoga at her retirement community. Survivors include her children, Karen (Douglas) Kenyon of Pavilion, Gretchen Mittelstaedt of West Henrietta and William (Laurie) Robbins of Manlius; three grandchildren, Cecilia Kenyon, Emily Mittelstaedt and Thomas Robbins; a sister, Celine (Ido) Turri of Cheektowaga and nieces and nephews. Donald Dart
Batavia – Donald L. Dart, 89, of Batavia, a salesman, repairman and troubleshooter at Ferrellgas in Batavia prior to his retirement, died Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at Batavia VA Medical Center. Mr. Dart was born June 2, 1925 in Manitou Beach, MI, a son of the late Chester H. and Florence (Southard) Dart. He was a 1942 Graduate of Onsted High School and was a member of Northgate Free Methodist Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars, Veness – Strollo Post 1602. He had previously been a milk hauler and enjoyed hunting with special friends. He served honorably in Central Europe during WWII with the US Army’s Rainbow Division. His regiment liberated the concentration camp at Dachau. He was very active in veteran’s affairs and was past president of the Rainbow Division Veterans. He is survived by his wife, Joanne E. (Peavey) Dart whom he married June 25, 1950; 5 children, James Dart and Janet Murray, both of Batavia, Dale (Katheryn) Dart of Courtland, Darrell (Jennifer) Dart of Holley and Kayleen (Vincent Pastore) Dart of LeRoy; 6 grandchildren, Tom (Amanda) Murray and Courtney Dart, both of Alexander; Sarah Dart, Laura Dart and Emma Dart, all of Courtland and Ethan Dart of Holley; 2 great-grandchildren, Nora Murray and Jack Murray, both of Alexander and a brother, Dean Dart of Manitou Beach, MI. Melvern Pashong
Batavia – Melvern L. “Mel” Pashong, 87, of Batavia, passed away Saturday, (June 21, 2014) at his home. Mr. Pashong was born September 15, 1926 in Batavia, a son of the late Walter and Felmer (Hartman) Pashong. Mel served honorably during WWII and was a former member and deacon of the First Presbyterian Church of Batavia. He was also a former member of the American Legion and VFW. He greatly enjoyed to fish, travel, and spend time at the Pok-A-Dot where he was a mainstay. Mr. Pashong will be remembered by those who knew him as a kind, gentle, family man. He is the husband of Shirley (Kirkpatrick) Pashong. The two were married in East Pembroke in 1950. Surviving along with his wife, are his children, Bonnie (Dennis) Dugan and Randy Pashong both of Batavia; grandchildren, Kathrine (Michael) Whitcomb of Fairport, Joshua Pashong and Rachel Pashong both of Batavia; great-grandchidren, Andrew and Zachary Whitcomb of Fairport; a brother, Ronald (June) Pashong of Stafford; a sister, Shirley (late William) Krause of Byron. Josephine (Tabone) Giordano, 94, formerly of Oakfield, died June 14, 2014 in Clearwater, Florida She was born Ocotber 2, 1919 in LeRoy, a daughter of the late John B. and Lena (Orrango) Tabone Sr. Survived by three children, Constantino “Dino” Giordano, John L. Giordano and Maureen (Giordano) Growney; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Josephine is the wife of the late John S. Giordano and sister of the late Jasper Tabone, Francis DiSalvo, Santo Tabone Sr., John Tabone Jr., Sadie Wilcox, Rose Condello and Elvira Kittle. Entombment was at Sylvan Abbey Mausoleum in Clearwater, FL on June 20, 2014. A Church Memorial Service will be announced at a later date.
Eli Kauffman
Eli Kauffman, 90, of Batavia, died Tuesday (June 24, 2014) at his home in Batavia. Eli was born January 12, 1924 in Gordonville, PA, a son of the late Daniel and Mary (Smoker) Kauffman. In 1970, Eli and his family moved to Castile, where he became an adult student at Elohim Bible Institute. Prior to enrolling at Elohim Bible Institute, Eli was a dairy farmer. He would later become the dean and a teacher at the school. From 1973 to 1977, he participated in the Southern Sudan Mission Relief Program. Eli was a courier for the Bank of Castile and also delivered for Beverly’s Flowers in Batavia. A member of Grace Baptist Church in Batavia, Eli loved reading, studying and gardening and also enjoyed cross country skiing, cycling, swimming and politics. Survivors include his wife, Donna (Seekins) Kauffman of Batavia; children, Edward Kauffman of Savannah, GA, Elsie (Michael) Lyth of England, William (Ruth) Kauffman of Coeur d’Alene, ID, Waneta (William) Weiss of Castile and Chuck (Laura) Kauffman of Viroqua, WI; step-children, Garnet (Denise) Wood of Buffalo, Margaret (Robert) Smith of Mooresville, NC, Drew Wood of Phoenix, AZ and William (Diane) Wood of Springville; one sister, Miriam Umble of Pennsylvania; twenty-seven grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his first wife, Susie (Petersheim) Kauffman, who died in 1999. Eli is the brother of the late Paul Kauffman and Ammon Kauffman. Katherine Raduns
Basom – Mrs. Katherine A. Raduns, 95, of Basom, passed away on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at the LeRoy Village Green Nursing Home. Mrs. Raduns was born March 17, 1919 in Shelby, a daughter of the late Edward and Florence Eick Wolter. A longtime and active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Medina, Mrs. Raduns was a former Sunday School Teacher and taught at the church’s Vacation Bible School. She was a member of the Alabama Cemetery Association for over 20 years, where she served as the association’s secretary. She was a home demonstrator for Cooperative Extension and was an avid quilter who made over 100 quilts a year for home relief. Her husband, Carl R. Raduns, passed away on February 10, 1987. She is survived by her sons, Gerald (Bonnie) Raduns of Basom and Robert (Deborah) Raduns of Webster; three grandchildren, Jonathan (Elizabeth) Raduns of New Jersey, Nathan (Ashton) Raduns of Batavia and Elizabeth Raduns of New Jersey; her great-grandsons, Noah and Isaac Raduns, both of New Jersey; her sister, Doris Schuner of Medina and several nieces and nephews. She is the sister of the late Paul Wolter and Marjorie Schuner. There are no prior visiting hours. Friends and family are invited to her funeral service on Monday at 7 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1212 West Avenue, Medina.
