Roland Marvin
Rosario Tumminello
Batavia – Rosario S. Tumminello, 85, retired manager at the former Marshalls News Store in Batavia, died Thursday (October 16, 2014) at the New York State Veteran’s Home. Mr. Tumminello was born December 16, 1928 in Batavia, a son of the late Rosario and Josephine (Gugino) Tumminello. “Rosie” began working the Marshall’s News Store as a paperboy at the age of 8. At 12 years old he was hired to work inside the store and remained with the store for the next 52 years eventually retiring as manager. On Tuesday and Thursday mornings you would find Rosie and many of his friends at the Miss Batavia Diner. He was a member of Resurrection Parish, a 1948 graduate of Batavia High School, life member of the Veness-Strollo VFW Post 1602 and a life member of the Alexander Fire Department. A US Army Veteran, he served during the Korean War. He is survived by his wife, Audrey E. (Hawker) Tumminello, whom he married June 11, 1955. Survivors also include two sons, Keith (Sandra) Tumminello of Plano, Texas and Paul (Kevin Dugan) Tumminello of New York, NY; two daughters, Annemarie (David) Baldo of Rochester and Marianne (Stephen) Scalise of Webster and one sister, Ida Tumminello of Batavia. He is the grandfather of Nicholas Baldo. Abigail Scalise, Sarah Scalise, Garrett Scalise and Spencer Scalise. Nieces and nephews also survive. He is a brother of the late Mary Cecere, Frank Tumminello, Josephine Hayden and Samuel & Anthony Gaeta. Rena Wolcott
Rena H. Wolcott, 94, of Byron, died Friday (October 17, 2014) at the LeRoy Village Green Nursing Home. Rena was born July 30, 1920 in Batavia, a daughter of the late Frank and Amelia (Royal) Wolcott. She was a bookkeeper at George Smith Motors and Wortzman Furniture, both in Batavia. Rena loved cats. Survivors include four nephews, Thomas Lambert of Elba, Robert (Debbie) Lambert of Mt. Morris, John Lambert of Florida and Henry Lambert of Colorado and several great-nieces and great-nephews. She is a sister of the late Viola Lambert, Gordon Wolcott and Henry Wolcott. Batavia – Joanne Harris Hollister Crawford, 85, of Batavia, passed away Thursday, (October 16, 2014) at the Genesee County Nursing Home, in Batavia. Ms. Crawford was born December 11, 1928, in Perry, a daughter of the late Joseph and Charlotte (Harris) Hollister. She is survived by a son, Thomas Marcello of Las Vegas; a grandson, Dustin Marcello of Las Vegas. There will be no prior visitation. Family and Friends are invited to attend Joanne’s Memorial Service, Wednesday (October 22, 2014) at 11:00 a.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia. Elizabeth Scroger
Medina – Elizabeth A. Scroger, 92, of Medina, passed away on Monday, October 20, 2014 at The Villages of Orleans Health and Rehabilitation Center, where she had resided the past five years. Mrs. Scroger was born May 25, 1922 in Java, a daughter of the late Walter and Rose R. (Becker) Reisdorf. Her husband, Ward Scroger, passed away in 1979. She is survived by her son, Robert Scroger of Medina. She is predeceased by her sister, Rosina Wrathall. There are no prior visiting hours. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Cary Cemetery, Oakfield. Joseph Marone
Joseph V. “Trigger” Marone, age 90, passed away on Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at the Genesee County Nursing Home. He was born January 17, 1924, in Batavia, a son of the late Dominic and Rose Sce Marone, and was a member of the Ascension Parish (the former St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church). Joe was a lifelong resident of the city of Batavia. He attended Jackson Grade School and was a 1942 graduate of Batavia High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the Navy Scout Squadron V-50, in the South Pacific in World War II. He was awarded the Pacific Theater Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. After discharge Joe attended Mt. Morris Trade School. Joe was co-owner of the Pok-A-Dot Restaurant, a Batavia landmark, established in 1953 with Phillip “Philly” Pastore. The two owned and operated Sunny’s Restaurant in 1977 – 2000. Joe was also owner of United Horse Transportation Company. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, Holland Land Office Museum, Veness- Strollo Post 1602 Veterans of Foreign Wars and the United States Trotting Association. He is survived by his daughter Roseann M. (Philip) McGlade of Gettysburg, PA; a brother, Patrick Marone of Lake Worth, Fla.; a sister, Gertrude (late Melvin) Woodring of Pittsford; a sister-in-law, Rose (late Angelo) Gaeta – Marone of Batavia; godson and nephew, Patrick Mandia and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by an infant daughter, Angela Marone; sisters, Rose Marone, Mary Cina, Virginia Sanfratello, and Anna Mandia; brothers, Frank “Wiley” Marone, Louis Marone and Angelo (Sheiko) Marone; and a niece, Lilian Cina with whom he shared a birthday. There will be no viewing. A Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at Ascension Parish (Sacred Heart Church), 15 Sumner St., Batavia. Private interment will be in St. Joseph’s Mausoleum in Batavia.
Jennie LaFarnara
Jennie (Tessitore) LaFarnara, 96, of Batavia, died Saturday (October 25, 2014) at her son’s home in Batavia surrounded by her family. Jennie was born October 11, 1918 in Canton, Ohio, a daughter of the late Nicholas and Victoria (Spina) Tessitore. A member of Ascension Parish, Jennie was also a member of the Altar and Rosary Society at the church. She enjoyed baking, cooking and spending time with her great-grandchildren. Survivors include a daughter, Teresa (Anthony) Figlow of Batavia; a son, Nicholas (Kathy) LaFarnara of Batavia; grandchildren, Jodi (Steven) Coburn, Michael (Heather) Figlow, Adam (Teresa) Figlow, Jamey LaFarnara, Jessica LaFarnara and Ashley (Dan) Davis; two sisters, Mafalda “Muff” Calarco of Batavia and Clara (Peter) Rossi of LeRoy; 21 great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Jennie is predeceased by her husband, Anthony LaFarnara. She is a sister of the late Joseph Tessitore, Cecilia Ball, Rose Pellegrino, Angeline Falcone and Helen Pellegrino. Alice Rose Lynch, 86, of Oakfield, passed away on Sunday (October 26, 2014) at the United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia. Alice was born November 1, 1927 in Aquila, Italy, a daughter of the late Americo and Anna (Ercole) Paolucci. A member of St. Padre Pio Parish, Alice was an assembler at General Motors in Rochester and also worked at the former Sylvania’s Plant in Batavia. Survivors include two sons, Robert (Susan) Lynch of Oakfield and Leo (Deborah) Lynch Jr. of Alabama, NY; grandchildren, Steven (Veronica), Matthew, Yvette (Justin) and Brittany; a brother, Umberto Paolucci of Florida; two sisters, Gina Shultz and Ida Monachino, both of Batavia; four great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband, Leo Edward Lynch Sr. and her son, James Lynch. Alice is a sister of the late Joseph Paolucci and Mary Russo. Robert Bird
Batavia – Robert C. “Bob” Bird of Batavia, New York died October 27, 2014 at UMMC. He was born October 13, 1928 in Batavia, the son of Charles F. and Pearl (Morley) Bird. He was very active in high school sports playing golf, basketball, baseball and football. In 2002 he was honored to be among the first group inducted into the Batavia Blue Devils Athletic Hall of Fame. In 1950, during the Korean War, he was drafted into the Army. He was stationed in Germany where he played on the 2nd and 4th Division Golf Teams and played in the Berlin Open. He was an Industrial Engineer at Sylvania and retired when the company closed their Batavia facility. For several years he enjoyed working as a golf instructor at Terry Hills C.C. Bob was a Member and Past-President of Stafford County Club. In 1957 he set the course record of 65, which he held for many years. He was Men’s Club Champion sixteen times and was awarded an Honorary Membership in 2007. Bob had his greatest golfing experience in 1984 when he qualified to play in the U.S. Senior Open at Oak Hill C.C. in Rochester, New York. His happiest days started at the YMCA where he would meet his lifelong friends for an early morning workout and swim – then out for coffee – then out to his second home at Stafford C.C. for an often profitable round of golf. He lived the good life…. Although he had been in failing health for several years, he remained in good spirits and looked forward to going out for coffee with friends several mornings each week. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Shirley (Mitzi) Bird; step-daughter Christine Steves of Wisconsin, and step-son Jim (Kim) Peterson of Conesus Lake; grandchildren Damian, Monica, Colleen, Erin (Pete) and Shannon, and great-grandson Dominik. He is also survived by his first wife, Arlene C. Bird, and their daughters Robin Connelly of Bel Air, Md. and Julie (Rodney) Smith; grandchildren Laura, Carin, Brian and Jordan. Also sisters-in-law Marilyn (Charles) Wilson of Missouri and June (Gene, deceased) of Maine. He was pre-deceased by his sister, Shirley Paine. Also surviving are his brother-in-law, Ted Paine, nieces Peggy (John) Cunningham and Judy (George) Ziobrowski, nephew John (Sue) Mikel and their families. At Bob’s request there are no calling hours. Friends and family are invited to share memories and celebrate Bob’s life at a casual gathering to be held Thursday, October 30, 2014 from 6 to 8 pm at Bohn’s Restaurant, Clinton St. Rd. Batavia. Bob chose to be cremated and his remains will be buried at Byron Cemetery where services will be private. In lieu of flowers donations are suggested to a charity or organization of donor’s choice. Alan Furber
Batavia – Mr. Alan Furber, age 75, of Batavia, passed away on Thursday, October 30, 2014 at his home in Batavia surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Furber was born March 16, 1939 in Chester, England, a son of the late Thomas and Dorothy Beecroft Furber. An avid fisherman and golfer, Mr. & Mrs. Furber wintered for several years in Florida. He retired from Home Medical Supply, Inc. in Batavia. He also worked as Produce Manager for Marchese’s grocery store for many years. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marion Bate Furber; two daughters, Karen (John) Campbell of Chili; Elaine (Graham) Harding of Batavia and; three grandchildren, J.R. (Jill) Campbell of Batavia and Jeffrey Campbell of Batavia; Amanda Jane Harding of Charlotte, North Carolina, his great-grandson, Nathan Campbell of Batavia; his brother, Brian (Judy) Furber of Chester, England and several nieces and nephews. Kitty Tessitore
Batavia – Kitty Tessitore, of Batavia, passed away on Monday, November 3, 2014 at United Memorial Medical Center, in Batavia. Mrs. Tessitore was born in Batavia, a daughter of the late Joseph and Concetta Pastore Morette . Mrs. Tessitore was a self-employed hairdresser for many years and previously owned Kitty’s Beauty Salon of Batavia. She was an avid reader and loved knitting afghans and baby clothes for her friends who were expecting a newborn. She made well over 100 afghans, all were made to order, and like a snowflake, no two were alike. She was a devoted member of St. Joseph’s Church, the Sodality of the church and served as a Eucharistic Minister. She also volunteered her time at the church by cleaning and ironing the vestments of the priests and cleaning the church. Her husband, Joseph Tessitore, passed away on February 21, 1999. She is survived by several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She is the mother of the late Nicholas Tessitore who passed away in 1959 and sister of the late Michael and Vincent Morette, Rosemarie Kenyon, Josephine Patterson and Ann DiSalvo. There are no prior visiting hours. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, 303 East Main Street, Batavia. Douglas R. Weig, 57, of LeRoy, died Wednesday (November 5, 2014) at Crossroads House in Batavia. Doug was born August 15, 1957 in Buffalo, the son of Sally (Christ) Weig of Florida and the late Richard Weig. Doug enjoyed gardening and karaoke. He was a machinist at Lexington Machine in Rochester. Surviving along with his mother are his wife, Linda (Lampke) Weig of LeRoy; two daughters, Jennifer (Caleb) Hicks of Pennsylvania and Jeanette (Vince) Lapri of Chili; one son, Brandon Weig of Batavia; two grandsons, Conner Hicks and Logan Hicks, both of Pennsylvania; three sisters, Lusanne Simard of Batavia, Tracy Weig of Florida and Victoria Johnson of Rochester; his mother-in-law, Carol Irwin of LeRoy; three brothers-in-law, Rex (Janet) Lampke of Silver Springs, Steve (Lisa) Lampke of Ithaca and Dale Lampke of New York City; four sisters-in-law, Margaret (Craig) Hurley of LeRoy, Barb (John) Vescovi of LeRoy, Robin (Mark) Hall of Batavia and Amy (Rick) Weaver of Lockport and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Bethany Center – Priscilla J. Norton, 86, a longtime resident of East Bethany, passed away on Monday, November 10, 2014 at her home. Mrs. Norton was born April 15, 1928 in Batavia, a daughter of the late Richard and Gertrude Day Nichols. A 1945 graduate of Batavia High School, Mrs. Norton was a lifelong member of the Bethany Center Baptist Church where she volunteered her time with the ladies aide. She enjoyed watching TV, shopping and being with family and friends. She loved her home and the view of the valley. She especially loved her grandson. Her husband, Harold S. Norton, passed away in 1984. She is survived by her daughters, Janet E. Norton of Newark, Joanne R. Norton of East Bethany and Jean A. (Robert J.) Hutchinson of Byron; her grandson, James Robert Hutchinson of Auburn Hills, Michigan and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Rosa Miller
Rosa Lee Miller, 85, of Batavia, died Monday (November 10, 2014) at the Genesee County Nursing Home in Batavia. Rosa was born May 14, 1929 in Batavia, a daughter of the late Joseph and Stella (Hale) Richardson. She was raised by her late uncle and aunt, Clarence and Harriett Hubbard. She was a legal secretary at Gardner & Balbick in Batavia and served on the Genesee County Fair Board, where she was a past treasurer. Rosa was a member of the Genesee County Republican Women’s Committee and the First Presbyterian Church in Batavia. Rosa was also a former member of the American Cancer Society and enjoyed camping, crafts and reading. Survivors include her children, Lloyd J. Miller of Stafford, Linda (Allyn) Bernard of Oakfield, Randy (Cindy) Miller of Corfu and Denise (David) Votaw of Waterford, PA; her grandchildren, Chad (Sandra Mullen) Bernard, Sean (Hillary) Miller, Mark (Kati) Bernard, Robert Votaw, Justin Miller, Gregory (Suzanne) Votaw, Jonathan Votaw and Andrew Miller; three great-grandchildren and many close nieces and nephews. Sidney Mulcahy
East Bethany – Sidney C. “Sid” Mulcahy, 88, of East Bethany, passed away Monday, (November 10, 2014) at United Memorial Medical Center, in Batavia following a brief illness. Mr. Mulcahy was born April 24, 1926 in Stafford, a son of the late Arthur and Berniece (Greening) Mulcahy. Sid was our father, grandfather, great grandfather, and husband to our mother. He was a total inspiration to us all, and we called him “Hon”. Hon did it all: die cast machinist, farmer, mailman, bus driver, and worked at “Brownies” in East Bethany, as a hauler for septic tanks and vaults. As kids, we loved to take turns riding with him, especially for the hamburgers! He loved to drive around the neighborhood in his pickup, along with a dog or two, just to see what was going on. Our father did everything his own way and we still respect him. We love you, we love you now, we love you more tomorrow, and we will love you forever. You are now in Heaven with mom. We love you. He is the husband of the late Onnalee (Milroy) Mulcahy, who passed away Dec. 26, 2007. Sid is survived by his children, Marsha (Bob) Schafer of Granville, OH, Linda (Tom) Drumsta of Alexander, Arthur (Pilar Sanchez) Mulcahy of Perry, and James (James Melito) Mulcahy of Gates; grandchildren, Arthur (Joelan) Mulcahy of West Henrietta, and Shelli (Shawn) Shepherd of Granville, OH; Great-grandchildren, Madison and Alexa Mulcahy, and Chase Shepherd. Batavia – Elsie Carter, 90, of Batavia, a retiree of the Bank of America, passed away Tuesday, (October 28, 2014) at Eastside Nursing Home, in Warsaw. Ms. Carter was born December 17, 1923 in Batavia, a daughter of the late Charles and Ethel B. (Burns) Carter. Elsie loved cats and was an avid basketball fan. She also enjoyed watching Giants football, especially Eli Manning. There will be no prior visitation. Services will be held privately at the convenience of the family. Age 90, November 11, 2014, at home in Tonawanda, NY, beloved husband of 67 years to Elinor (nee Hawkins) Krafchak; father of Rev. Barbara K. (Rev. John L.) Tipton, David A. (Karen Battaglia), Todd M. and Nancy L.; grandfather of John A. Tipton; brother of Teresa Potopchuk, Anne, and the late Stephen II, Helen (John) Milley, and James; also survived by many nieces and nephews. He served in the United States Navy as an Electrician’s Mate from 1943 to 1946.

Batavia – Beverly J. Fisher, 86, of Batavia, a Registered Nurse and Supervisor at the Genesee County Nursing Home, Batavia, prior to her retirement, passed away Thursday, (November 13, 2014) at Strong Memorial Hospital, in Rochester. Mrs. Fisher was born June 14, 1928 in Batavia, the daughter of the late William L. and Leila Mae (Christian) Betters. She graduated as a Registered Nurse from the St. Jerome School of Nursing in 1950 and worked for St. Jerome Hospital and the VA Medical Center in Batavia. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Batavia and greatly enjoyed her family and dog. Her husband, LaVerne L. Fisher, died February 7, 2013. Survivors include 2 sons, Rand (Deborah) Fisher of Batavia and Scott (Jodi) Fisher of Oakfield; a daughter, Laurie Fisher of FL; 4 grandchildren, Rand (Rachel) Fisher II and Jennifer Fisher, both of Batavia, Anthony Fisher and Jillian Fisher, both of Oakfield; a brother, Ralph Betters of CA, several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Floyd D. “Buck” Betters, Gordon Betters, Robert Betters, and Marshall Betters. Ida Tumminello
Batavia – Ida A. Tumminello, age 96, passed away on November 18, 2014 at the Batavia Health Care Center where she resided for the past ten years. She was born July 1, 1918 in Batavia, a daughter of the late Rosario Tumminello, Sr. and Josephine Gugino Gaeta Tumminello. Ida was a medical secretary at the Genesee County Health Department prior to her retirement. She was previously employed at Teresi Insurance Company. A devout Catholic, she was a lifelong member of the former St. Anthony’s Church where she actively participated. She was predeceased by her brothers; Samuel (late Mary) Gaeta, Anthony Gaeta, Frank Tumminello and Rosario Tumminello; sisters, Josephine (late Stuart) Hayden, Mary (late Arthur) Cecere and a nephew, Ronald Cecere. She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Audrey Tumminello and Rosemarie Tumminello, both of Batavia; nieces and nephews, Betty (Richard) Ahl, Joanne (Paul) Kruppa, Dolores (David) Prezyna, Thomas (Karen) Tumminello, Kathy Lathrop, Joanne Tumminello, Theresa (Peter) Tumminello, Keith (Sandra) Tumminello, Paul Tumminello, Annemarie (David) Baldo, Marianne (Steve) Scalise, Jeffrey Hayden, David Hayden and Corey Cecere. She will be remembered as a close and loving member of her family. There will be no prior visiting hours. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 12 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, 303 East Main Street, Batavia. Karin Durawa
Karin M. Durawa, 49, of Batavia, died unexpectedly on Monday (November 17, 2014) at her home in Batavia. Karin was born December 2, 1964 in Buffalo, a daughter of the late David and Suzanne (Kilger) Szymanski. Karin enjoyed attending her children’s sporting events, spending time with her family and her dog, Bailey. She also enjoyed photography. Survivors include her husband, Kevin Durawa of Batavia; her son, Gregory (Jessica) Durawa of Batavia; her daughter, Sydney Durawa of Batavia; her grandchildren, Mikenna Durawa and Liam Durawa, both of Batavia; two sisters, Sandra (Steven) Janes of Cheektowaga and Kathy Jo (Joseph) Morlock of Boston, NY and numerous nieces and nephews.
