Frances Cupler

Oakfield – Frances Cupler, 91, of Batavia, formerly of Oakfield, passed away Friday, (November 21, 2014) at United Memorial Medical Center, in Batavia. Mrs. Cupler was born May 13, 1923 in Weirton, WV, a daughter of the late Frank and Josephine (Barilla) Galline. Mrs. Cupler was a member of the American Legion Post 626 Ladies Auxiliary, and greatly enjoyed doing puzzles, watching soap operas, and playing bingo at Washington Towers. She loved to crochet and was proud to have donated blankets to the VA and other area nursing homes. She loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren deeply. Frances is the wife of the late Clair Cupler, who passed away April 23, 2008. She is survived by her children, Lorraine (Jerry) Allen-Agett of Hilton, Lois (John) Scopano of Oakfield, and C. Richard (Marianne) Cupler of Alabama; grandchildren, Terry (Michelle) Allen of Clarendon, Jeffrey (Kathy) Allen of Hilton, Rebecca (Shannon) Hilchey of Rochester, Angie (Peter) Firmalino of Tannersville, NY, and Sara Tea Cupler of Alabama; 9 great-grandchildren; sisters, Theresa (late Gino) Velletta of Batavia, Margaret (late Durwood) Balduf of Batavia, Josephine (Donald) Palone of Oakfield, and Julia (late Melvin) Drake of Appelton. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Frances is preceded in death by her siblings, Joseph (late Minnie) Galline, Mary (late Mario) Benedetti, and Jennie (late Raymond) Nesbitt. Friends may call on Wednesday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Burdett & Sanford Funeral Home, 11 Maple Avenue, Oakfield, where Frances’ Funeral Services will immediately follow calling at 6:00 PM. Batavia – Carmelo C. Calarco, 91, a retired muck farm owner and operator, died Friday (November 21, 2014) at Sunrise Assisted Living in Malvern, Pennsylvania. Mr. Calarco was born September 16, 1923 in Elba, a son of the late Anthony and Mary (Nicosia) Calarco. He was a member of Resurrection Parish, Past Grand Knight and life member of the Knights of Columbus, Msgr. Kirby Council and the Fr. Capodanno 4th degree Assembly of the Knights of Columbus and past president of the Genesee County Youth Board. His wife, Nancy (DiGiovanni) Calarco died in 1995. Survivors include two sons, Anthony (Donna) Calarco of Texas and Thomas (Ingrid) Calarco of Virginia; two daughters, Carol Britton of Pittsford and Bernadette (Bart) Corsaro of Pennsylvania. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He is the brother of the late Alfonso, Frank, and Mary Severe. Friends may call on Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main St., Batavia. The Msgr. Kirby Council of the Knights of Columbus will hold a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home on Friday. The Mass of Christian Burial will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday, November 29, 2014 at Resurrection Parish – St. Mary’s Church, 18 Ellicott Street, Batavia. Anna D. (Tresco) Palmer, 96, of Batavia, died Sunday, November 23, 2014, at the LeRoy Village Green Nursing Home. Anna was “born on the 4th of July,”1918 in Batavia. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Antoinette (DeFabio) Tresco. She was a member of Resurrection Parish. A loving person, a devoted mother and a doting grandmother, Anna had many passions including cooking, crocheting, reading and praying. Anna will be missed by everyone who knew her. Survivors include a son, Joseph (Jennie) Palmer of Citrus Springs, FL; three daughters, Anne (Fred) Degenhardt of Punta Gorda, FL; Peppi Palmer of Batavia; and Mary Jo (Steven) Ancona of East Brunswick, NJ; six grandchildren, Kelly (Lance) Shelpman of Ohio; Kelly (Joseph) Zambito of Punta Gorda, FL; Andrea (Ryan) Casey of Greenfield, NY; Sarah (Colleen) Schoenberger of Cleveland, OH; Kier (Geoffrey) Rocheleau of Orlando, FL; and John Ancona of East Brunswick, NJ; a brother-in-law, Sam Cammarata of North Carolina; a sister-in-law, Rose Tresco of Batavia; seven great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Anna is predeceased by her husband, John Palmer; a granddaughter, Meredith Degenhardt; a sister, Marie Emanuel and three brothers, Thomas, William and Gabriel Tresco. There are no prior calling hours. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated for Anna on Saturday, November 29th at 10:30 am at Our Lady of Mercy, 44 Lake Street, LeRoy. Alexander – Louis R. Huber, 83, of Alexander, an insurance underwriter for Glens Falls Insurance Company and the Home Insurance Company, passed away on Monday, November 24, 2014 at United Memorial Medical Center. Mr. Huber was born August 1, 1931 in Batavia, a son of the late Louis B. and Florence Marie Painter Huber. A 1949 graduate of Alexander High School, he graduated Cum Laude from the University of Notre Dame with a degree in Business Administration in 1955. A dedicated and faithful member of St. Mary’s Church in Batavia he was a member of Our Lady of Batavia Council, Knights of Columbus and the Father Vincent R. Capodanno 4th degree Assembly of the Knights of Columbus. He collected farm tractors and enjoyed going to auctions and flea markets to add to his collectibles. Louis also volunteered his time at St. Mary’s Church working Bingo. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army from 1955-1957. He is survived by his brother, Joseph (Loretta) Huber of Alexander; his sister-in-law, Marcia Huber of Alexander; nieces, Florence (Patrick) Nolan of Alexander, Felissa (Malcolm) Ferrell of North Carolina and Staci (Robert) James of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; his nephew, David V. Huber II of Alexander and six great-nieces and great-nephews. He predeceased by his brother David V. Huber. Friends may call on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Mr. Hamm-Johnson was born January 9, 1969 in Lewiston, a son of Nancy (Donald) Hamm-Johnson of GA and James Dinsmore of Grand Island. A 1987 graduate of Pembroke High School, he was an avid sportsman and outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He is survived by his wife, Peggy (Pinson) Hamm-Johnson, whom he married on November 10, 2007, 5 children, Amanda (Mark) Crosby of OH, Kayla Hamm-Johnson of GA, Gregory Hamm-Johnson of Alexander, Daniel (Victoria) Hamm-Johnson of Pembroke, Jessica Hamm-Johnson of OH; a step-daughter, Autumn Gaylord of Alexander; 4 grandchildren, Quentin, Bryson, Mykah and Kayden; his step-mother Bernice Dinsmore of Getzville; mother-in-law Bonnie Pinson of Rochester; 5 brothers and sister, Krista (David) Stryker of Tonawanda, Susan Johnson of NC, Linda (Duffy) Schultz of Owego, Donald (Sandy) Johnson of NC and Ada Dinsmore of FL; several nieces and nephews. Wayne was born November 15, 1948 in Buffalo, a son of the late William and Audrey (McNall) Greenman Sr. A veteran, Wayne served with the United States Army. He enjoyed spending time with his family and animals. Survivors include fiancée, Julie Blanco of Batavia; two brothers, William (Carolyn) Greenman of California and Robin Brooks of Batavia; four sisters, Pamela Petersen of Indiana, Geraldine Cowell of Batavia, Pennye (John) Morales of New Mexico and Barbara (Terry) Waugh of Virginia and several nieces and nephews. He is a brother of the late Drew Greenman and Charles Brooks and an uncle of the late Christopher Brooks and Paxton Brooks. There are no prior calling hours and services will be private. Batavia – Everett A. Johnson, 57, of Batavia, passed away on Saturday, November 29, 2014 at United Memorial Medical Center. Mr. Johnson was born January 5, 1957 in Batavia, a son of the late Percy A. Johnson, Jr. and Helen McGinnis Johnson. A longtime resident of the Genesee County Nursing Home, Everett volunteered many hours at the daycare center at the nursing home and played Santa Claus for the children during the Christmas season. He also participated in the annual Alzheimer’s Walk that was held at the nursing home. He was a fan of NASCAR and would root for Dale Earnhardt, Sr. and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Survivors include his sister, Monica Summers of Oakfield; nieces and nephews, Tamielle Holmes of Ohio, Matthew Johnson and Christina Harmon, both of Batavia and Jeremy Summers of East Bethany and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Jack R. Dudley, 89, of Batavia, died Monday (December 1, 2014) at the United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia. Jack was born June 8, 1925 in Canada, a son of the late William and Dorothy (McCarthy) Dudley. A veteran, Jack served with the United States Army. Jack was the founder of the Jack R. Dudley Tennis Program which has served the community for several decades. He earned his law degree at the University of Buffalo, his Doctorate of Education from the University of Rochester and began his professional career as a counselor at Attica Schools. Jack spent the remainder of his career teaching statistics at SUNY Brockport. Survivors include a sister, Jane (Bruce) LaWarne of Canada; a sister-in-law, Jean Dudley of Bergen; thirteen nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and great-nephews. He is a brother of the late Keith Dudley, Stan Dudley, Frank Dudley and Ida Carey. Calling hours are Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Milton P. Unger Oakfield – Milton P. Unger, 84, of Oakfield, died Friday, December 5, 2014 at Rochester General Hospital, in Rochester. Mr. Unger was born August 24, 1930 in Holley, the son of the late Clifford Unger and Eva (Johnson) Unger Martin. He served with the Army’s 196 Infantry Reg. during the Korean War. He retired from US Gypsum where he worked as a mechanic and then worked at Halat Brothers in Elba. He was a longtime member of the West Barre United Methodist Church, and was an active outdoors person who enjoyed gardening, yardwork and fixing things. He built bird houses and bird feeders and enjoyed reading. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn (Johnson) Unger, whom he married April 7, 1956; 3 children, Patty A. (David C.) Knapp of Holley, Clifford Unger of Oakfield and Brenda (Michael) Dingle of Barre; 4 grandchildren, Justine (Nathan) Newara of PA, John P. Unger and Taylor Unger, both of Oakfield and Kelli Dingle of Barre; 2 great-grandchildren, Paige Newara and Charlie Newara, both of PA; 2 sisters, Milicent Wilder of Oakfield and Judith (Loren) Hall of Gasport; several nieces and nephews. Batavia—Lance Bennett, 76 of Batavia died Friday, December 5, 2014 at the New York State Veterans’ Home in Batavia with his family by his side. Mr. Bennett was born on February 11, 1938 in Wellsville, NY; the son of the late Eleanor Erhardt. He was a graduate of Wellsville High School, Mansfield University, and SUNY Brockport having earned two Masters Degrees—one in counseling and one in educational administration. He also attended SUNY Plattsburgh and Arizona State University. Mr. Bennett was a firm believer in the power of education and was an avid reader—always having a thirst for knowledge. He is the husband of Beverly Lanphear Bennett of Batavia, the father to Kelley Bennett (David Herbst) of Greece, Krista Gibbs (Eric Knapp) of Chili and Kurt (Amy) Bennett of Memphis, NY. He is the grandfather to Colin and Keira Bennett, Sarah and James Gibbs, and Austin, Erica, and Jacob Knapp. He is the cousin to Malcolm (Pat) Wormley of Batavia, Judy (Terry) Prindle of Chandler, Arizona, Betsy (George) Tobias of Lake George, Minnesota, Charlcie Walkoff of Murphreesboro, Tennessee, and Fred Wormley of Kernersville, North Carolina. He is predeceased by his mother and stepfather, Eleanor and Joseph Erhardt, his aunt and uncle, Kathleen “Kat” and Edward Walchli, his brother, Robbin “Skip” Bennett, his mother-in-law, Eleanor Darmody, and his granddaughter, Molly Eva Gibbs. Mr. Bennett was a Vietnam War Army veteran where he spent most of his time stationed in Alaska and the Pacific. Throughout his career, he taught Earth Science in Geneseo, he was a guidance counselor in Albion, he was a vice principal at Notre Dame High School, and he coached varsity football while at Geneseo. He was also a board member for the Genesee Amateur Hockey Association, and he coached soccer for the Genesee Amateur Soccer Association. He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He took annual trips to Canada with his son and friends. He was known for his dry humor and quick-witted comebacks. In high school, he played basketball, football, and baseball. East Pembroke – Brian J. Fix, 40, of East Pembroke, died Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital. Brian was born April 29, 1974 in Batavia, the son of Mary Ann Klein Fix of East Pembroke and the late Douglas A. Fix. An avid hunter and fisherman, Brian was a member of the Sportsmens Coon Club. Surviving along with his mother are his sister, Jennifer (James) Harlach; his daughter, Brittany Fix; nieces and nephew, Alicia, Angela and Hailey Natalizia and Michael Natalizia; and several aunts uncles and cousins. Brian was predeceased by his grandparents, Anthony and Mildred Fix and John and Dorothy Klein. LeRoy – Jane L. Roth Butler Howard, 94, of LeRoy, formerly of Stafford, Thursday, December 11, 2014 at LeRoy Village Green Nursing Home, in LeRoy. Mrs. Howard was born June 21, 1920 in Rochester, the daughter of the late George and Minerva (Brown) Jacobus. She graduated from Brockport Normal School, was a member of Alabama Basom United Methodist Church and, as a home maker, “she had a quiet pride for her family”. She enjoyed sewing and music. She was the wife of the late Paul Roth who died in 1978, Carlton Butler who died in 1991 and Bernard Howard who died in 2003. Survivors include a son, Mark (Laurie) Roth of Amherst; four daughters, Sandra (Dennis) Gillett of Bergen, Lucille (AMZ) Roth of Buffalo, Linda (late John) Sanders of West Bethany and Sharon (Lloyd) Clark of East Bethany, two step daughters, Donna (Lawrence) Karas of Churchville and Norma (Edward) Penczek of OH; 13 grandchildren, several step-grandchildren, several great-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews including Carole Kerr and Nancy Jacobus. Batavia – Albert Polk, 86, of Batavia, passed away on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at Highland Hospital, in Rochester. Albert was born May 16, 1928 in Glade Spring, Virginia, second eldest son of the late Ballard and Ardean Vannoy Polk, Sr. Albert obtained his elementary education from Glade Spring Colored School and graduated from Kings Mountain Colored Training School in Abingdon, Virginia. Albert accepted Christ at an early age uniting with Plum Creek Baptist Church. Albert’s military service in 1950 was at Camp Polk, Louisiana for basic training. He was assigned to Germany on the General S.D. Sturgess. Albert served in the Korean War for two years. On November 6, 1952, Albert was discharged from Fort George Mead in Maryland. Albert married the late Peggy Jean Smith by Reverend Hardy in 1953. They moved to Oakfield in 1955 where Albert was employed by the U.S. Gypsum Company in Oakfield. In 1960, Albert and Peggy purchased the family home in Batavia. Albert retired from U.S. Gypsum Company in 1990 after 34 years of service. His wife of 53 years, Peggy Jean Smith Polk, passed away on April 4, 2006. Albert is survived by one son, Albert Wayne Polk of Batavia; five daughters, Janet Lynn Dawson, Freda Ledora Polk, Evangelist Wanda Dorothea Polk, Ivy Polk-Taylor and Brenda Marie Polk, all of Batavia. He also leaves to cherish his memory of the following grandchildren; Jessica Lynn, Peggy Lee, Leona Jean and Quella Sylvia Marie Polk, Roy Lee, Timothy Edison and Derek James Taylor; great-grandchildren, Alyssa Justine and Michael Frederick McKenzie, Quentin Russell Polk and Perry Lee Kenneth Taylor; his son-in-law, Wayne Andrew Burriss of Silver Springs, Maryland; his sister, Georgia Polk of Glade Spring, Virginia; his sister, Evelyn Polk of Chilhowie, Virginia along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Albert was predeceased by his two daughters, Sylvia Jean Polk-Burriss and Sheila Ann Polk. He was the brother of the late Ballard Polk, Jr. and Ellis (Doris) Polk. LeRoy – Richard L. Tiede, 81, of LeRoy, died Saturday, December 13, 2014 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. Richard was born August 26, 1933 in Batavia, a son of the late Frank and Grace (Heide) Tiede Sr. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a carpenter with the Local 279 in Rochester. Survivors include one brother, Roger (Dennis Alaimo) Tiede of Connecticut; two sisters-in-law, Mary Tiede of Batavia and Marlene Tiede-Beausoliel of Arizona; a brother-in-law, Bruce Culling of Florida and several nieces and nephews. Richard is predeceased by his wife, Louise Tiede. He is a brother of the late Raymond Tiede, David Tiede, Frank Tiede Jr. and Dorothy Culling. Mr. Houser was born March 4, 1934 in Batavia, a son of the late James B. and Blanche (Warren) Houser, Sr. Jim enjoyed doing word search puzzles and painting. His cats, Fluffy, Gizmo, and Salem as well as his dog, Zeus were the loves of his life. He is survived by his close friends, Linda (Mike) Fitzsimmons of Basom. His is the brother of the late Sybil Jamison, Shirley Wood, and Dorothy Worthington-Johnston. Thomas R. Hartwig, 63, of Byron, died Monday, December 15, 2014 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. Tom was born August 25, 1951 in Batavia, a son of the late John and Marjorie (Hilborn) Hartwig. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, Tom was a loss control engineer for Travelers Insurance. A veteran, he served with the United States Navy and was a past member of the South Byron Fire Department and the Byron Ambulance squad. Tom was the president of the Genesee Camp of Gideons. He loved woodworking and trap shooting. Tom was an advance lay speaker for the United Methodist Church and since June, he was preaching at the Roanoke Community Church. Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane (Greene) Hartwig of Byron; two sons, Chad (Jodi) Bates of Byron and Derek (Tina) Hartwig of Woodstock, VA; grandchildren, Cameron and Samantha Bates and Makenna and Maelyn Hartwig; two brothers, Jack (Kathy) Hartwig of Batavia and Robert Hartwig of Chambersburg, PA; one sister, Laurie (Gene) Bischoff of Williamson and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours are Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Burdett & Sanford Funeral Home, 11 Maple Avenue, Oakfield. Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday also at the funeral home. Private burial will be in Reed Cemetery, Oakfield. Memorials may be made to the South Byron United Methodist Church, P.O. Batavia – Kathleen D. Montreal, 52, of Batavia, passed away on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at her home in Batavia. She was born December 2, 1962 in Batavia, a daughter of Thelma Wood Montreal of Batavia and the late Frank Montreal. She enjoyed watching NASCAR and football. Surviving along with her mother are her longtime companion Donald Myers of Batavia; two daughters, Shannon Nigh and Sirena Myers, both of Batavia; two sisters, Carol Montreal and Susan Montreal, both of Batavia; her brother, Thomas Montreal of East Pembroke and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call on Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia, where services will follow at 6 p.m. Burial will be in East Bethany Cemetery. Bergen – Augustus C. ”Gus” Warren, 87, of Godfrey’s Pond, a supervisor at GTE Sylvania in Batavia, prior to his retirement, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, December 17, 2014 at his home. Mr. Warren was born October 20, 1927 in Batavia, a son of the late Louis C. and Leora (Schultz) Warren. He served from 1946 to 1947 aboard the USS Little Rock while in US Navy. He led the congregational singing and choir at the Brockport Church of Christ. He and his wife were the caretakers at Godfrey’s Pond from 1983 to 1990 where he was a member since 1948 and a past member of the board of directors. He is survived by his wife, Laura (Pratt) Warren, whom he married June 26, 1948; 5 children, Mark (Annette) Warren of Fabius, Gary (Dana) Warren of Batavia, Kathie (Richard) Housaah of Brockport, David (Kelly) Warren of Batavia and Wendy (Benjamin) Ritzenthaler of Shortsville; a sister, Mary Swingle of Batavia; 11 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Leonard Warren and Donald Warren. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Genesee County Fish and Game Protective Association, Inc., P.O. Box 217, Batavia, NY 14021. Private burial will be at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Alexander. Arrangements were entrusted to H.E. Turner & Co., Inc. of Batavia.

Batavia – Alice V. Chaya, 85, passed away on Friday, December 12, 2014 at her home. Mrs. Chaya was born January 16, 1929 in Batavia, the daughter of the late Webster and Gladys Shattuck Booth. A member of Resurrection Parish she will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. She is survived by her husband, Walter F. Chaya, whom she married October 28, 1949; her daughter, Kathy M. Porter of Batavia; two granddaughters, Katherine (Peter) Metzler of Batavia and Dr. Sarah Porter of Rochester; her sister-in-law, Gladys Balbick of Wyoming and special friend and care giver, Regina Abdella. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. She was the mother-in-law of the late Stephen Porter and step-daughter of the late George Poste. There are no prior calling hours. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at Resurrection Parish – St. Mary’s Site, 18 Ellicott Street, Batavia. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels, c/o Senior Center, 2 Bank Street, Batavia, New York 14020 or Crossroads House, P.O. Box 403, Batavia, New York 14021. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Batavia.
