Batavia – Margaret Scibetta, 93, of Batavia, died Sunday, December 21, 2014 at Genesee County Nursing Home, in Batavia. Mrs. Scibetta was born September 19, 1921 in Albion, a daughter of the late Thomas and Valerie (Depczyzinski) Pahura. She was a member of the former St. Anthony’s Church in Batavia Her husband, Peter Scibetta, died July 3, 2000. Survivors include her son, Peter (Norma) Scibetta, Jr. of Webster; 2 brothers, Ed (Loretta) Pahura and John Pahura, both of Albion; a sister-in-law, Corinne Pahura of Albion; 2 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late David Scibetta and sister of the late Rita Pahura and Thomas Pahura. Batavia – Peter R. Corbelli, 80, of Batavia, passed away on Monday, December 22, 2014 at the Genesee County Nursing Home. Mr. Corbelli was born April 13, 1934 in Robertsdale, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Carlo and Dominica Tacca Corbelli. A member and usher at Ascension Parish, Mr. Corbelli was a retiree from the Post Office in Batavia. Mr. Corbelli served his country during the Korean War with the United States Army. An avid golfer and card player, he loved people and life. A devoted fan of the New York Yankees, he was a gifted athlete who played semi-pro football. He is survived by his wife, Barbara A. Burns Corbelli, whom he married December 30, 1961; two sons, Peter R. (Jennifer) Corbelli, Jr. of Batavia and Paul (Julie) Corbelli of LeRoy; four grandchildren; Brianne Elizabeth Corbelli and Paul A. Corbelli, Jr., both of LeRoy, Pierce Joseph Corbelli and Parker Aidan Corbelli, both of Batavia; four brothers, Bernard (Patricia) Corbelli of South Carolina, Santi (Rita) Corbelli of Harris Hill, Octavio (Lynn) Corbelli of Arizona and Leo (Susan) Corbelli of Nevada; two sisters, Antoinette Martin of Missouri and Elizabeth Seeburg of Arizona; two sisters-in-law, Antoinette Corbelli of Buffalo and Annette Corbelli of Batavia and several nieces and nephews. He is the brother of the late John, Louis and Victor Corbelli and Mary Josephine Pilato. Byron – Warren A. Leaton, 90, of Byron, a former owner of Lea-View Farm in Byron, died Friday, December 19, 2014 at his home, in Byron. Mr. Leaton was born June 5, 1924, a son of the late Alfred and Bertha Squires Leaton. He was a member of the Byron Presbyterian Church, a Life Member of the South Byron Volunteer Fire Company, member of the Kiwanis Club of Byron, and the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Genesee County. He is survived by his wife, Norine (White) Leaton, whom he married in 1951; a daughter, Cindy Favata of Bergen; 2 sons, James Leaton and Alan (Roxanne) Leaton, both of Byron; a brother, David (Joanne) Leaton of Byron; 8 grandchildren, Ann (Eric) Knaak of Honeoye Falls, Aimee (Jim) Austin of South Byron, Jeffrey Leaton and Jared Leaton, both of Byron, Alan Leaton, Jr. of Rochester, Ashlee Leaton and Adam Leaton, both of Byron and Melanie DiFalco of Long Island; 3 great-grandchildren, Kendall, Griffin and Jordan and several nieces and nephews. John Haber
John B. Haber, age 90, of Batavia entered into eternal rest on Friday, December 26, 2014 at United Memorial Medical Center. Born October 18, 1924 in New York City, he was the son of the late John and Rose Mudder Haber. After attending Textile High in Manhattan, New York he enlisted in the Navy where he proudly served in World War II from 1943 to 1946 on both the USS Hopping and USS Tortuga in the South Pacific. He was a member of Genesee Country Church in Oakfield. After twenty-five years of faithful employment as a machinist he retired in 1986 from Grahams Manufacturing Company following fifteen years of service as a spotter/cleaner with Deluxe Dry Cleaners. His family can attest to the fact that he was a sports fanatic. Born and raised in New York City he remained a diehard fan of the New York Rangers and New York Yankees rooting for them from his recliner whenever they played. In his younger days he played on the YMCA basketball team and enjoyed being Captain of the Grahams bowling team for twenty years. One of his greatest achievements was teaching many local youngsters the value of sportsmanship coaching a Babe Ruth League for fifteen years; and he took great pleasure recounting stories of grown men stopping him in town and thanking him for being the best coach they ever had. Married October 18, 1947 on his twenty-third birthday he is survived by his wife, Jeanne Eleanor (Ingalsbe) Haber of 67 years; daughters, Carole Haber of Brookline, Massachusetts, Donna Jean (John) Herbert of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania and Nancy (Matt) Paul of Gay, Georgia; grandson Sean Widlake of Seattle, Washington and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by fraternal twin sisters, Evelyn Holm and Ethel Schumann. There are no prior visiting hours. Oakfield – David P. Patterson, Jr., 64, of Oakfield, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, December 26, 2014 at United Memorial Medical Center. Mr. Patterson was born June 16, 1950 in Batavia, the son of the late David P. Sr. and Cecile Gilliatt Patterson. A graduate of Oakfield-Alabama High School, he was a dedicated and faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church. An avid hunter and fisherman, Mr. Patterson enjoyed woodworking and carpentry. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Cornwell Patterson, whom he married February 9, 1985; his children, Timothy (Angela) Bennett of Nebraska, Rebecca (Steve) Martin and David P. (fiancée Shannon Pennington) Patterson, III, both of Raleigh, North Carolina; four grandchildren, Matthew and Sarah Bennett, both of Nebraska and Nick and Kaitlyn Martin, both of Raleigh, North Carolina; his sister, Bonnie Caton of Oakfield and her children, Michael, Tim and Todd Caton; along with several other nieces and nephews and his foster brother, Richard Bisig of Batavia. Batavia – Mary J. Lauterborn, 79, of Batavia and Lake Park, Fla, passed away Friday, (December 26, 2014) at Jupiter Medical Center, in Jupiter, Fla. Mrs. Lauterborn was born February 28, 1935 in Batavia, a daughter of the late Frederick and Josephine (Nagorniak) Aquina. Mary was a former member of St. Mary’s Church in Batavia and enjoyed dancing and listening to music. She loved to spend time with her family, travel, and dogs; especially corgis. She had been wintering in Florida for more than 30 years. She is the wife of the late Jay Lauterborn, who passed away in 2005. Survivors include two sons, David (Dorothy) Walsh of Lake Park, FL, Steven (Maria) Walsh of Batavia; step children, Maureen (Steven) Leopold of Churchville, Michael Lauterborn of Spencerport; a sister-in-law, Agnes Aquina of Lake Park, FL; special nephews, Frederick (Laurie) Aquina of Batavia, and Francis (Linda) Aqunia of East Pembroke. Nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; along with several nieces nephews and cousins also survive. She is preceded in death by her brother, Francis Aquina. Batavia – Angelo C. Orticelli, Sr., 68, of Batavia, died Tuesday, (December 30, 2014) at United Memorial Medical Center, in Batavia. Mr. Orticelli was born June 14, 1946 in Buffalo, a son of the late Angelo J. and Ilene (McConell) Ortichelli. He is survived by his children, Raphaela Orticelli of Elma, Barbara Orticelli of SC, Billie Jo (Gary) Greco of Buffalo, Angelo Orticelli, Jr. of Buffalo, and Nicholas (Nancy) Orticelli of West Seneca. David Culver
Bergen – David E. Culver, 60, of Bergen, a bus driver at Byron – Bergen Schools in Bergen, died Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at United Memorial Medical Center, in Batavia. Mr. Culver was born August 13, 1954 in Rochester, a son of the late Earl N. and Lydia L. (Naum) Culver. Mr. Culver graduated from Byron Bergen High School and had retired from Delco Products. He was a member of SCOPE, the NRA and was a state champion in the Bus Rodeo Competitions. He was a known as a good hearted person and was well liked in the community. Survivors include his three children, David M. Culver (Gregory S. Wollaston) and Bridget (Chris) Cichocki, both of Rochester and Nicholas Culver of Batavia; two sisters, Deborah R. Culver of Bergen, and Dawn (Terry) Speed of Byron; a sister-in-law, Cindy Culver of Byron; his loving friend, Stacy Culver of Batavia, his grandchildren, Christopher, Anna, Lily and Xavier and several nieces and nephews. Florence Morse
Batavia – Florence H. Morse passed away peacefully on Friday, January 2, 2015 at age 99. She was born June 28, 1915, to Edward and Lena (Hofmeister) Herthum in Oriskany, NY. Florence was predeceased by her son, Edward Morse who died in 1973, her husband, Jack in 1982 as well as her parents and 7 siblings. She is survived by her daughter, Joanne Morse of Webster, NY and several nieces and nephews. Florence graduated from Geneseo Normal School and taught elementary school in Spencer, Northport and Lockport, NY. After marrying in August of 1945, she and Jack ran the Cape Cod Kitchen Diner on West Main St., Road in Batavia. Florence then became the Children’s Librarian at the Richmond Memorial Library for 15 years. She completed her career as the Librarian at John Kennedy Elementary School. Upon retirement, she spent several winters in Florida and then returned to live year round at the Manor House in Batavia where she spent 13 very happy years, thanks to the wonderful staff and residents there. A special recognition of gratitude goes out to Joyce Myers and Tina Hagen for their loving care of Florence. Services will be held at a later date and will be published when scheduled. Steven J. Coraci, age 61, died on January 1, 2015 at Crossroads House in Batavia, New York. He is survived by his wife, Lisa M. Kroemer, of Stafford, New York; his son, Dustin J. Weiderman, of Rochester, New York, his sisters, Carol Rapone of Caledonia, New York, Joanne (Gregory) Albert of Henrietta, New York and Jacqueline (Kevin) Green of Plano, Texas, his nieces and nephews and their children, aunts and uncles, and his little dogs, Trixie and Max. Steve was a graduate of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University; he served in the United States Marine Corps 1972-75. His work life was spent primarily with Eastern Airlines, CharterOne Bank and Paychex. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Batavia and most recently a volunteer with our local BID Council. Steve will be remembered for many wonderful attributes, his integrity, honesty, humility and perseverance. ELBA – Rosamond H. Peterson, 93, of Elba, passed away peacefully Friday, 1/2/15, at UMMC, Batavia, surrounded by family, friends and love. She was born in Volney, New York in 1921, the daughter of Haynes & Lillian (Simons) Snyder and was the wife of the late Harold A. Peterson. A graduate of Buffalo State Teachers College, teaching at various schools until teaching 25 yrs. as Art teacher at (RSD) Rochester School for the Deaf. (Pre-K – HS), retiring in 1983. A longtime resident of Webster, NY, until moving to her daughter’s home in 1994. Surviving are her daughter Lorraine Damon, 3 grandchildren, Krista, Brandy & Robert Douglas, 5 great-grandchildren, Trevor, Gina, Damian, Chloe & Kaylee. There are no prior calling hours and burial will be held privately at a future date in Volney.
Leon Bennett
BATAVIA — Leon C. Bennett, 92, of Batavia passed away Sunday (January 4, 2015) at United Memorial Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born on July 23, 1922, in Batavia, the son of Fred and Ida (Bowen) Bennett. After graduating youngest in his class at Batavia High School, Leon enlisted in the US Navy at the beginning of World War II and subsequently worked on the P-38 Lightning… the only American fighter aircraft in production throughout America’s involvement in the entire war. Upon returning to Batavia, Leon worked at Bell Aircraft Corporation, Scott Aviation, and ultimately retiring from Xerox Corporation. He was a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church of Batavia, and Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks (BPOE 950). An avid bowler, golfer, collector, and socializer…a great many people remember him as that guy who called bingo at the Elks Lodge every Thursday night, and the nut that went skydiving for his 90th birthday. He loved life and lived it to the fullest…you never knew where he might turn up. Leon was predeceased by his wife, Marilyn “Pete” (Davis) who died March 29, 2004. He is survived by his three children, Michelle A. Ireland of Bar Harbor, ME, Ronald R. Bennett of San Diego, CA, Douglas P. Bennett of Portsmouth, NH; five grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren. Alfred Gray
Perry – Alfred C. Gray, Sr., age 73, of Perry, passed away on Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at Wyoming County Community Hospital. Mr. Gray was born June 16, 1941 in Batavia, a son of the late Alfred E. and Dorothy Andrews Gray. He attended school in Elba and was a die-hard fan of the Buffalo Bills. He enjoyed watching football, woodworking, hiking, fishing, canoeing, camping and riding his motorcycle. Mr. Gray loved going to Letchworth State Park and being with his grandchildren. Along with his wife Caroline, they managed Kwik-Fill gas stations in Batavia on Cedar Street and Clinton Street Road. He is survived by his wife, Caroline M. Lougheed Gray, whom he married June 16, 1962; his children, Donna Gray Bonczyk of Batavia, Lee (Sharri) Gray of Corfu and Caroline (Michael) Nichols of Perry; three brothers, Wilbur (Dawn) Gray of Batavia, David (Esther) Gray of Elba and Herbert (Don McCall) Gray of Rochester; his brother-in-law, James (Nancy) Lougheed of Washington; two sisters-in-law, Beverly (Charles) Wenzel of Webster and Donna Lougheed of Florida; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his son Alfred C. Gray, Jr. who passed away on July 30, 2004; his sister, Virginia Benson and his brother-in-law, Harry Lougheed. There are no prior visiting hours. Theodore Paine
Byron – Theodore W. Paine, 82, of Byron, a retired Security Guard from Kodak and Byron – Bergen Schools, passed away Saturday, (January 10, 2015) at Monroe County Community Hospital, in Rochester. Mr. Paine was born February 11, 1932 in Clarion, PA, a son of the late George E. and Ida (Johnson) Paine. Ted served his country honorably with the Marine Corps from 1953-1955 and was a member of the American Legion and VFW. He was very proud of his service to his country and to his community throughout the years. He is the husband of the late Shirley (Bird) Paine, who passed away in 1992. Mr. Paine is survived by his step-children, Margaret “Peggy” (John) Cunningham of Vero Beach, Fla, Judy (George) Ziobrowski of Syracuse, and John (Susan) Mikel of LeRoy; 4 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews, among them a special nephew, Phil (Victoria) Paine of North Chili also survive. Along with his wife, Ted is preceded in death by all of his brothers and sisters. Harry P. Leanen, 88, of Batavia, died Monday, January 12, 2015 at the Batavia Health Care Center. Harry was born August 13, 1926 in Batavia, a son of the late Frank and Amy (Pamphilon) Leanen. Harry enjoyed playing golf with Andy and Gary and working in his yard, especially gardening. He loved his cats and was a Buffalo Bills fan. Harry was an assembler at the former O&K Trojan in Batavia. Survivors include his daughter, Shelley Macdonald of Batavia; two grandchildren, Gary E. Macdonald and Melody (Andy) Stone, both of Batavia; one sister, Mary Waterman of LeRoy and several nieces and nephews. Batavia – Loretta A. Capuano Greco, 83, of Batavia, longtime member of Resurrection Parish in Batavia, passed away on Sunday, January 11, 2015 at the Genesee County Nursing Home. Mrs. Greco was born June 5, 1931 in Batavia, a daughter of the late Frank and Lucy Coticchio Capuano. She is survived by her husband, Jerome F. Greco, whom she married October 30, 1954; her son, Charles (Rebecca) Greco of Waddell, Arizona, her grandchildren, Yvonne (Jonathan) Simons who is currently stationed in Chavez, Belgium and Anthony J. Greco of Ohio; her great-granddaughter, Chloe Haley of Henrietta and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Vincent, Larry, Salvatore and Anita Capuano and Marie DiPietro. Batavia – Vivian A. Brumsted, 85, of Batavia, passed away on Sunday, January 11, 2015 at United Memorial Medical Center. Miss Brumsted was born January 30, 1929 in Oakfield, a daughter of the late Roy and Myrtia Kingdom Brumsted. A 30-year employee of G.T.E. Sylvania in Batavia, she was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Batavia and was an avid Bingo player. She is survived by her sisters, Florence Mooney of Oakfield and Iola Anderson of Stanton, Iowa; 16 nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Violet Karolak
Brockport – Violet M. Karolak, 98, of Brockport, a former school nurse at LaSalle High School in Niagara Falls, died Thursday, January 15, 2015 at Lakeside Biekirch Care Center, in Brockport. Mrs. Karolak was born March 30, 1916 in Niagara Falls, a daughter of the late Vincent and Julia (Prenanta) Nork. She served as a Lieutenant J.G. with the Navy’s Nurse Corps during World War II from 1944 to 1946, before serving in the Navy Reserves from 1946-1951. She had been stationed at Samson, Brooklyn and Great Lakes Naval Bases. She was a member of St. Brigid’s Church in Bergen and the Sweden Senior Center in Brockport. She attended Niagara University and graduated with her B.S. in Public Health from the University of Buffalo then graduated from the nursing school at St. Mary’s Hospital. Her husband, Richard I. Karolak, died December 2, 1995. Survivors include 2 nieces, Mary Catherine Statt of Buffalo, and Judith Ann Foster of Hilton; and a great-nephew, Foster Armendinger of Hilton.
